The team competes in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference The team was established in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA) franchise and joined the NBA in 1949 as a result of the merger between the BAA and the National Basketball League (NBL).

Bill Bradley joined as a third star player in 1965; he became one of basketball’s greatest players and later served as U.S. Senator from New Jersey for three terms from 1979 to 1997. In 1967, Holzman guided the Knicks to their first playoff series victory en route to their first Eastern Divisional Finals appearance they lost that series 4–2 to eventual NBA Finals champions Boston Celtics led by future Basketball Hall of-Famers Bill Russell and John Havlicek.

In 1970, despite having a year-long dispute with management over his salary and style of play, star player Willis Reed decided to return for another season with new Head Coach Red Holzman; Reed’s leadership style and scoring capabilities attracted other young players such asDave DeBusschere and Walt Frazier. That season saw many great moments from all members of what would soon be known as “The Greatest team in NBA History”, including Reed’s dynamic Game 6 performance against Baltimore in which he played despite an injury that left him unable to walk; Frazier’s Game 7 triple double performance that proved essential to defeating Los Angeles in the Western Division Finals en route to winning the NBA Championship and DeBusschere’s “rebirth” as a full-Time Playoff starter after years spent coming off of bench duty during his time with Detroit prior to being traded to New York midway through that season (a move which itself was essential towards giving New York enough quality depth to win it all). That year also markedthe first ever NBA Championship won by an African American head coach when Holzman led his team to victory over Los Angeles Lakers Head Coach Bill Sharman.
