The Tampa Bay Area has a long history of basketball, dating back to the early 1900s. However, Professional Basketball did not come to the region until 1968, when the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the NBA as an expansion team. The franchise was founded by entrepreneur George W. Steinbrenner III, who would later go on to become majority owner of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees
The Bucs made an immediate impact in their first season, led by star player Rick Barry. The team finished with a record of 45–37, good for third place in the Western Division behind the Los Angeles Lakers and San Francisco Warriors They then went on to defeat the Warriors in seven games in the Western Division Semifinals before losing to the Lakers 4–2 in the Western Division Finals.
In their second season, the Bucs again finished third in their division behind the Lakers and Warriors. However, they were unable to repeat their success from the previous year and lost in five games to eventual Eastern Conference Champions Boston Celtics in the Semifinals. Following this loss, Steinbrenner fired head coach Jack Ramsay and replaced him with former Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Chuck Knox.
The Knox era saw moderate success for the Bucs, as they made playoff appearances in each of his four seasons at Head coach However, they were never able to get past Celtics or Lakers en route to an NBA Finals appearance during this time period. After another disappointing playoff loss to Boston in 1974–75 season, Steinbrenner fired Knox and replaced him with former Buffalo Braves head coach Tom Heinsohn.
