Game recaps
After losing their opening game in the conference tournament the Cleveland State Men’s basketball team won four straight games to claim the Horizon League Tournament Championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament
The Vikings entered the Horizon League tournament as the number four seed, and opened up against the fifth-seeded Wright State Raiders. Wright State controlled much of the game, but Cleveland State was able to rally late and take a one-point lead with just over a minute to play. The Raiders answered with a basket of their own, and then Cleveland State missed a chance to win the game at the buzzer, sending the contest to overtime.
In the extra period, Wright State took control early and built a four-point lead. Cleveland State was able to tie the game with under a minute to play, but Wright State hit two Free throws with 21 seconds left to take a two-point lead. The Vikings had one last chance to tie or win the game, but their three-point attempt rimmed out as time expired, giving Wright State the victory.
Despite the loss, Cleveland State remained confident heading into their next game against Youngstown State The Vikings jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, cruising to an easy 75-61 win.
In the semifinals, Cleveland State faced off against top-seeded Green Bay The Vikings trailed by eight points at halftime but came out firing in the second half, quickly taking the lead. Green Bay battled back and took a late lead, but Cleveland State guard Trey Lewis hit a clutch three-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining to give his team a one-point lead. Green Bay had one last chance to win or force overtime, but their three-point attempt fell short as time expired, giving Cleveland State the victory.
In the Horizon League Championship game Cleveland State faced off against second-seeded Valparaiso. The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead and led by nine points at halftime. Cleveland State rallied in the second half and took a late lead thanks to some clutch shooting from Lewis and forward Anton Grady. Valparaiso had one last chance to tie or win the game, but their three-point attempt rimmed out as time expired

The roster is made up of players from all over the country, each with their own unique story and skill set that they bring to the team. Team statistics
Cleveland State finished the season with a 14-17 overall record and a 9-9 mark in Horizon League play. The Vikings finished in a tie for sixth place in the League Standings and earned the No. 6 seed in the Horizon League Tournament. CSU went 1-1 in the tournament, defeating No. 3 seed Oakland before falling to eventual tournament champion Wright State in the semifinals.

Cleveland State University has a new Head Coach for the Men’s basketball team John Beilein is from Burt, New York and played college basketball at the University of Richmond. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Wheeling Jesuit University before becoming Head coach of West Virginia University in 2002.
In his first season as head coach Beilein led the Mountaineers to a 25-10 record and their first NCAA tournament appearance in 11 years. In 2005-06, he took them to the Elite Eight with a 30-6 record. They lost to eventual National Champion Florida in that game. The following year, West Virginia went 28-13 and made it back to the NCAA Tournament but Beilein left for Michigan after that season.
At Michigan, Beilein compiled a 278-155 record in 12 seasons. He led the Wolverines to nine NCAA tournaments, including seven straight from 2012-18. They made it to the Sweet Sixteen four times under Beilein and the Elite Eight twice, losing to Louisville in 2013 and Oregon in 2017.
Beilein stepped down as Michigan’s head coach on May 13th, 2019 after 12 seasons. Two days later, he was announced as the new head coach at Cleveland State.
Assistant Coach profiles
Cleveland State men’s basketball assistant coach J.D. Gruber is in his second season with the program and his fourth season overall as a College Coach Prior to joining the Cleveland State staff, Gruber served as an assistant coach at Loyola (Md.) for two seasons.
Gruber is a native of Dublin, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Dayton in 2012 with a degree in Communications. He was a four-year member of the Dayton men’s basketball team appearing in 111 career games and helping the Flyers to an NCAA tournament berth as a senior in 2011-12.

March Madness history
The Cleveland State Vikings men’s basketball team is a NCAA Division I college Basketball team representing Cleveland State University The Vikings currently compete in the Horizon League. They play their home games at the Wolstein Center, located on CSU’s campus in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.
The program has been to one NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament and one National Invitation Tournament As of 2019, they have an all-time record of 650-772.
