The History of San Diego State Basketball

San Diego State University has a long and storied history when it comes to basketball. The team has been to the NCAA tournament several times and has even won a few conference championships But, perhaps the most famous moment in San Diego State Basketball History came in the form of a coaching change.

In the early 1990s, San Diego State was in danger of having its Basketball Program cancelled due to low attendance and lack of interest. That all changed when Steve Fisher was hired as the new Head Coach Fisher quickly turned things around, leading the team to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in just his second season.

The run to the tournament was even more impressive given that it came during a time when there was very little parity in college basketball In other words, there were a few dominant teams that always seemed to make it to the Final Four, with everyone else fighting for scraps. For San Diego State to not only make the tournament, but also win a few games, was a huge accomplishment.

Fisher would go on to have even more success at San Diego State leading the team to six more NCAA tournament appearances before finally retiring in 2017. The program is now in good hands under new head coach Brian Dutcher, who has continued the winning tradition started by Fisher all those years ago.

The Current San Diego State Basketball Team

The 2020-2021 Season was cut short due to the COVID pandemic, but not before the team got off to a hot start. They were ranked as high as #4 in the AP poll and looked like a potential contender for the national title.

Despite the early end to their season, Coach Dutcher and the San Diego State Aztecs have proven that they are one of the top programs in college basketball

The Rivalries of San Diego State Basketball

San Diego State Basketball is on the rise. Under head coach Brian Dutcher, the Aztecs have won Mountain West regular season titles in three of the last four seasons. They’ve also made the NCAA Tournament in each of those three years, and their success has led to some intense rivalries brewing with other programs in the West.

One of San Diego State’s most heated rivalries is with the UNLV Rebels. The two teams have been battling for supremacy in the Mountain West for years, and the games are always highly anticipated. The Aztecs have had the upper hand lately, winning nine of the last 10 matchups, but that doesn’t make the games any less intense.

Another one of San Diego State’s rivals is the New Mexico Lobos These two teams have been playing each other since 1931, making it one of the oldest rivalries in College Basketball The games between these two teams are usually defensive battles, as both teams pride themselves on their defense. The Aztecs have won 12 of the last 13 matchups against the Lobos, but New Mexico always gives them a tough game.

With so much success recently, San Diego State basketball has developed some fierce rivals. These rivals provide some great games for Aztec fans to enjoy year after year.

The Traditions of San Diego State Basketball

San Diego State has a long and proud tradition of basketball excellence. Our Basketball Program is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to 1897. We have won 27 conference championships and made 28 NCAA tournament appearances. We are also one of only two schools west of the Rocky Mountains to have won an NCAA Basketball Championship doing so in 1963. Our men’s basketball team is consistently ranked among the best in the nation, and we are proud to be one of the premier programs in the west. Our traditions are many and we are passionate about our Aztecs!

The Media Coverage of San Diego State Basketball

Despite their recent successes, the San Diego State Aztecs have not received the media coverage that some believe they deserve.Part of the reason for this may be because, until recently, the Aztecs were not consistently competitive. They had made only one NCAA Tournament appearance prior to 2010, and that was in 1995. In 2010, they finally had a breakout year, winning their first conference tournament championship and finishing the season with a school-record 34 wins. But even then, they were overshadowed by more established programs such as Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas.

In the past few years, however, the Aztecs have established themselves as one of the best programs in the country. They have won four consecutive conference championships and made six straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Sweet Sixteen appearances. And yet, they still don’t receive much national media coverage.

One reason for this may be that San Diego State is not a “big name” school. It is not a member of a major conference like the ACC or SEC, and it does not have the tradition or history of some of the other “mid-major” schools such as Gonzaga or Butler. Additionally, while the Aztecs have been very successful under head coach Steve Fisher, they have not been able to take that next step and make it to the Final Four.

It is also worth noting that San Diego State does not have any players who are currently considered to be “household names”. This is in contrast to other programs such as Duke or Kentucky who often have multiple players each year who are projected to be high NBA draft picks.

So far this season, San Diego State has once again been one of the best teams in the country. They are currently ranked No. 4 in both major polls and are considered to be a serious contender for a National Championship With any luck, this will finally lead to increased media coverage for the program and help put them on par with other top college basketball programs around the country.
