Dawn Staley – Early Life and Career

Dawn Staley was born on May 4, 1970, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Staley grew up in one of the city’s public housing projects. Despite the challenges she faced while growing up, Staley excelled at basketball and became one of the nation’s top High School players. In 1988, she accepted a scholarship to play at the University of Virginia

At Virginia, Staley quickly established herself as one of the best college players in the country. She was a three-time All-American and led her team to three Final Fours. After graduating from Virginia in 1992, Staley played Professional Basketball for several years before turning to coaching.

As a freshman, she was the first player in Atlantic Coast Conference history to be named both Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Dawn Staley was born on May 4, 1970 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The youngest of four girls, she was raised by her mother Diane and her father Clarence, who worked as a longshoreman. Clarence instilled a strong work ethic in his daughters, taking them to work with him during summer vacations so they could learn the value of hard work Staley would later credit her father as the biggest influence in her life.

As a child, Staley developed a love for basketball, playing locally in Philadelphia and dreaming of one day playing in the NBA like her idol Julius Erving When she was eight years old, her parents divorced, and she began to focus even more on basketball as a way to deal with the pain of the divorce.
