Introducing the team
The Fredonia Women’s Basketball team is gearing up for another exciting season! We sat down with Coach Becky Penfold to get her thoughts on the team’s prospects.
“I’m really excited about this team,” said Coach Penfold. “We have a lot of talent and experience, and I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people.”
The team is led by Senior Captain Emily Buckner, who was named to the All-Conference team last year. Joining her are fellow seniors Hannah Trimble and Sam Jones who are both scoring threats.
“Emily is a great leader and has been a key part of our success over the past few years,” said Coach Penfold. “Hannah and Sam are bothible enforcers on defense, but they can also put up some points when we need them.”
The team also features a strong group of underclassmen, including sophomores Abby Wrobel and Allison Lagen, who will be looking to make an impact this season.
“Abby and Allison both had great freshman years and I know they’re eager to take their game to the next level,” said Coach Penfold. “They’re going to be big contributors for us this season.”

The conference

The Fredonia women’s basketball team will aim to build on a strong 2018-19 campaign that saw the team go 18-8 overall and 12-4 in conference play The team will have to do so without one of its key contributors from last season, however, as guard Sarah Sobey graduated and is now playing professionally in Europe.
The Blue Devils will look to fill the void left by Sobey’s departure with a mix of experience and youth. Senior forward Kelsey Graham returns after averaging 13.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game last season, while junior guard McKenna Hennessey – who averaged 9.2 points per game – also returns. The team will also look to newcomers like freshman guard Katie Monaghan to make an impact.
With a mix of experience and youth, the Fredonia women’s basketball team will look to compete for a conference title once again in 2019-20.
Key returners
The Fredonia women’s basketball team is coming off a successful season in which they finished with a record of 18-7, good for second place in the conference. The team is looking to build on that success this season with a core group of returners that will provide leadership and experience.
The team will be led by senior guard Sarah Miller, who averaged 12 points per game last season. She will be joined by junior forward Emma Brady, who was second on the team in scoring at 11 points per game These two players will provide a solid foundation for the team on both ends of the court.
Another key returner for the team is sophomore guard Kate Ryan, who provides valuable experience and leadership despite only being in her second year with the team. She will be joined by freshman guard Bella Antonacci, who is expected to make an immediate impact on the court.
With a strong core group of returners and some talented newcomers, the Fredonia women’s basketball team is poised for another Successful Season
Key newcomers
As the Fredonia women’s Basketball team looks ahead to the 2019-20 season there are a few key newcomers that could have a big impact on the team’s success.
One player to watch is freshman guard AbbyMae Gustafson. At 5-foot-7, she has the ability to play both guard positions and is a good shooter with a High Basketball IQ. She’ll have an opportunity to contribute right away for the Blue Devils
Another freshman, 6-foot center Emma Manning, also has a chance to make an immediate impact. She’s a physical presence in the post who is already one of the team’s best defenders. She’ll need to continue to develop her offensive game, but she has the potential to be a real difference maker for Fredonia.
Sophomore guard Lisa Seiler is another player who could see her role increase this season. She improved significantly as a shooter during her freshman year and will be counted on to provide some scoring punch from the guard position.
The Blue Devils will also be looking for contributions from a pair of junior college transfers, guards Alexus Murphy and Makayla Silvers. Both players are athletic and can score in a variety of ways. They should add some much-needed depth to Fredonia’s backcourt rotation.
With a mix of experienced returners and talented newcomers, Fredonia has the potential to have a very successful 2019-20 season.
