The History of Gamecock Baseball

The University of South Carolina has a long and storied tradition of excellence in baseball. The Gamecocks have won 11 National Championships more than any other team in the SEC. They have also produced 28 Major League Baseball players, including Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson

The Gamecocks began playing baseball in 1892 and have been a force to be reckoned with ever since. In 1902, they won their first National Championship They would go on to win back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012. The Gamecocks are the only team in NCAA history to win three consecutive National Championships.

In 2015, the Gamecocks made history again when they became the first team to win four straight SEC titles. They went on to win their sixth National Championship that year, cementing their place as one of the greatest college baseball teams of all time.

The greatest moments in Gamecock Baseball

Since its inception in 1892, the University of South Carolina baseball program has established itself as one of the premier college baseball programs in the country. The Gamecocks have won a total of 21 conference championships and have been to the NCAA tournament 33 times, including 22 times in the last 25 years. In 2010, the Gamecocks won their first ever NCAA National Championship

The Gamecocks have also produced a number of Major League Baseball stars, including Hall of Famer Hank Aaron Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter and Most Valuable Player Award winners Al Rosen and Billy Williams. USC has also had 29 former players and coaches inducted into the college baseball Hall of Fame

There have been many great moments in USC baseball history but here are some of the most memorable:

-In 1896, USC pitcher John Devin Schmidt threw a no-hitter against Clemson.
-In 1897, USC won its first conference championship
-In 1922, USC pitcher Sad Sam Jones threw a no-hitter against The Citadel.
-In 1924, USC won its second Conference Championship
-In 1925, USC went to its first NCAA Tournament
-In 1927, USC third baseman Harry Richeson hit three home runs in one game against Furman.
-In 1949, USC went to its first College World Series
-In 1955, USC won its third conference championship.
-In 1968, USC went to its second College World Series Hank Aaron made his debut as a Gamecock this season.
-In 1970s, under Head Coach June baseball teams compiled a 597–173 record (.776), appeared in eight NCAA Tournaments (including five College World Series), won seven SEC regular season championships and six SEC tournament titles fora total of 13 SEC championships over the decade. -The 1980s ended with head coach Tanner’s teams having compiled an 817–297–1 (.733) overall record that included 11 trips to NCAA postseason play (six regional tournaments and five College World Series), seven SEC regular season championships and an SEC Tournament title in 1984 for eight SEC championships over his ten seasons as Head Coach at Carolina.-From 1990 through February 28thof 2008 while under Raymond Tanner’s leadership as director of athletics,-Carolina’s 14 athletic squads captured 61 SEC team titles (fiveSEC overall titles), won two NCAA team national championships (women’s soccer in 2000 and men’s baseball 2010), made 97 appearances in NCAA postseason competition (including 12 “Sweet Sixteen” appearances by women’s basketball)and captured 34 individual national championships.-On July 1st 2008 Eric Hyman became only the 6th leader in 120 years of Carolina athletics when he was named South Carolina’s Athletics Director.-During Hyman’s tenure Gamecock student athletes have represented South Carolina with distinction both on and off the field.-To date they have captured 27 individual national titles while 31 teams have advanced to NCAA postseason action 61 times(counting this year). 28 different squads have claimed an amazing 74 SEC Championships during his leadership!

In 1948, USC pitcher Johnny Sain led the Gamecocks to their first NCAA championship with a 3-0 victory over Yale in the finals. It was the first of Sain’s three NCAA titles as a Head coach at USC.

Just two years later, in 1950, USC won its second NCAA Championship with a 5-2 victory over Missouri in the finals. The game was stopped in the ninth inning due to darkness, making it the shortest NCAA Championship game ever played.

USC won its third NCAA Championship in 1974 with a 5-1 victory over Arizona State in the finals. The Gamecocks were led by future major league baseball Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt who hit .384 with four home runs and 35 RBI during his junior season.

In 2001, USC won its fourth NCAA Championship with a 4-0 victory over Arizona State in the finals. The Gamecocks were led by All-American catcher Jeff Lusardi, who hit .386 with 20 home runs and 77 RBI during his senior season.

The most recent moment on this list is also one of the most recent moments in USC baseball history. In 2011, USC defeated Vanderbilt 3-2 to win the College World Series It was the first time that Vanderbilt had ever lost a College World Series game, and it gave USC its fifth NCAA Championship.

As one of the most prestigious programs in all of College Baseball the South Carolina Gamecocks have experienced a fair share of success throughout the years. Winning back-to-back National Championships in 2010 and 2011, along with six College World Series appearances overall, has solidified the Gamecocks as one of the top programs in NCAA Division I baseball.

However, there have been a few times where upsets have occurred and the Gamecocks have come out on the losing end. Here are three of the biggest upsets in recent memory.

In 2014, South Carolina entered the NCAA tournament as a top seed and was hosting a regional at Carolina Stadium. However, they would be stunned in their opener as fourth seed Charleston Southern pulled off a 5-4 upset. The Cinderella Buccaneers went on to win the regional, while the Gamecocks were sent home early in disappointing fashion.

In 2016, USC once again found themselves as hosts of an NCAA regional this time at Founders Park. The Gamecocks seemed to be well on their way to winning their third straight regional after winning their first two games handily. That’s when UNC-Wilmington showed up and spoiled the party. The Seahawks put up 9 runs in each of their next two games to win the regional and send USC packing.

Just last season, in 2019, South Carolina was once again hosting an NCAA regional at Founders Park with hopes of making a deep run into June. After winning their opener against Greenville Tech, things took a turn for the worse as Appalachian State came into Columbia and won two straight games to eliminate USC from the tournament.

The 1970 team is widely considered to be one of the best college baseball teams of all time. The team went an astounding 57-6 on the season and won the NCAA championship. The team featured future Major League All-Stars Mike Futrell and Tommy John

The 1975 team was another national powerhouse, going 53-16 on the season and winning the NCAA championship. The team was led by future Major League star Bill Madlock, who hit .358 with 19 Home Runs on the season.

The 2002 team is often considered to be the best gamecock baseball team of all time. The team went 54-14 on the season and won USC’s first ever College World Series title. The team was led by future MLB All-Stars Kip Bouknight and Justin Smoak.

The 2011 team is also in the conversation for best ever. The team went 55-14 on the season and won USC’s second College World Series title in dramatic fashion, coming back from 0-2 down to beat Florida in three straight games. The team is currently coached by Mark Kingston, who is in his fourth season at the helm. Kingston has led the Gamecocks to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the College World Series in 2019. The team has also been ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation during his tenure.
