Gopher Mens Hockey Roster: Introduction
This year’s Gopher Mens Hockey roster is filled with familiar faces and some new ones. Here’s a quick introduction to some of the Key Players on the team.
Forwards
Senior captain Tyler Sheehy returns for his fourth and final season with the Gophers. Sheehy is the team’s leading scorer and a dangerous threat on the ice. Other key forwards include junior Sammy Walker who is second on the team in scoring, and freshman Owen Power who has had an impressive debut season.
Defensemen
Junior Mattias Samuelsson is the Gophers’ top defenseman. A big and physical player, Samuelsson anchor’s the team’s defense. He is joined by fellow junior Brock Boeser, who provides a steadying presence on the blue line Freshman Ryan Johnson is another key player on defense, using his speed and puck-moving ability to create offense from the back end.
Gopher Mens Hockey Roster: Forwards
The Gopher men’s Hockey Team has 12 forwards on the roster this season. Here is a look at each of them:
-Nate Schmidt is a junior from St. Cloud, Minnesota. He is the team’s leading scorer with 16 goals and 32 assists for 48 points. He is also a good faceoff man, winning 54 percent of his draws.
-Erik Haula is a sophomore from Pori, Finland. He is second on the team in scoring with 18 goals and 27 assists for 45 points. He has good speed and is an excellent playmaker.
-Nick Bjugstad is a freshman from Blaine, Minnesota. He is third on the team in scoring with 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points. He is a big forward at 6’4″ and 216 pounds and uses his size to his advantage in the corners and around the net.
-Jake McCabe is a freshman from Eau Claire Wisconsin. He has four goals and eight assists for 12 points in 36 games. He is a solid two-way player who plays a physical game
– Zach Budish is a sophomore from Edina, Minnesota. He has seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 36 games. He missed all of last season with a Knee Injury but has come back strong this year.
– Nate Condon is a junior from Wausau, Wisconsin. He has six goals and 10 assists for 16 points in 35 games. He is an excellent skater with good puck skills.
-AJ Michaelson is a sophomore from Duluth, Minnesota.He has three goals and eight assists for 11 points in 33 games..He plays a solid defensive game and kills penalties.. Jordan Schroeder (9-13--22) did not make (15-8--23)the list because he recently left school early to sign (8-11--19)a professional contract with the Vancouver Canucks .

Gopher Mens Hockey Roster: Goalies
The Gopher men’s Hockey team has six goalies on its roster for the 2019-2020 Season Here’s a quick look at each of them.
#1 – Jack LaFontaine
LaFontaine is a freshman from Oakville, Ontario. He was ranked as the #2 North American goalie in the 2018 NHL Draft and he played for Team Canada at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
#31 – Mat Robson
Robson is a sophomore from Toronto, Ontario. He played in 12 games as a freshman and posted a .928 save percentage He was named Big Ten Second Team All-Star and was named to the All-Big Ten Rookie team.
#33 – Jack Berry
Berry is a junior from Long Lake, Minnesota. He transferred to the University of Minnesota after playing his first two years of college hockey at Boston College In his one season with the Gophers, he appeared in 13 games and posted a .919 save percentage.
#35 – Jared Moe
Moe is a sophomore from Roseau, Minnesota. He played in one game as a freshman and didn’t allow a goal in that appearance. He also appeared in two games at the 2018 World Junior Championship winning both games and posting a shutout against Slovakia.
Gopher Mens Hockey Roster: Coaches
The Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s hockey team is coached by Bob Motzko. Motzko was hired as the Golden Gophers Head Coach on May 30th, 2018. Prior to his hiring at Minnesota, Motzko served as the head coach of St. Cloud State University from 2005 to 2018. As Head Coach of the Golden Gophers Motzko has compiled a record of 62-26-8 (.695), which includes two NCAA tournament appearances and one Frozen Four appearance.
Assistant coaches for the Golden Gophers include Brett Larson and Ben Ward. Larson was hired as an Assistant Coach on June 4th, 2018, after serving as an assistant for one season at Western Michigan University. Prior to his coaching career, Larson played professional hockey for 16 years, including stints with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning and Chicago Blackhawks Ward also joined the Golden Gophers Coaching Staff on June 4th, 2018, after serving as an assistant coach at St. Cloud State University from 2016 to 2018.

Forwards
-Nate Schmidt: A big, strong forward who is good in both ends of the ice. He has a lot of potential and could be a top-six forward at the NHL level.
-Nick Bjugstad: A talented offensive player who has a great shot and good vision. He needs to work on his defensive game, but has the potential to be a top-line player in the NHL.
