Grading Every NBA Team’s Offseason

It’s never too early to take a look at how every NBA team fared during the offseason. Here’s a grades for every team’s Offseason Moves

Eastern Conference

The Eastern Conference saw a lot of movement this offseason, with several teams making big trades and free agent signings. Here’s a look at how each team did in the offseason, graded from A to F.

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks made a big splash in the offseason by signing center Dwight Howard to a three-year, $70 million deal They also brought in shooting guard Kent Bazemore and small forward Mike Muscala to help shore up their bench. Overall, the Hawks had a very successful offseason and should be one of the top teams in the East next season. Grade: A

Boston Celtics

The Celtics were very active in the offseason, making a number of trades and free agent signings. They added All-Star Power Forward Al Horford, shooting guard Jae Crowder small forward Jonas Jerebko and point guard Gerald Green. They also traded away point guard Marcus Smart and small forward Jeff Green Overall, the Celtics had a very successful offseason and should be one of the top teams in the East next season. Grade: A

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets made some noise in the offseason by signing Small Forward Tyler Johnson to a four-year, $50 million deal They also added shooting guard Chase Budinger and power forward Trevor Booker. However, they lost point guard Jarrett Jack to injury and will be without center Brook Lopez for at least the first part of the season. The Nets had a mixed offseason overall but should still be able to compete for a playoff spot in the East next season. Grade: C+

Charlotte Hornets

The Hornets were relatively quiet in the offseason, making only a few minor moves. They added power forward Roy Hibbert and shooting guard Marco Belinelli but lost shooting guard Courtney Lee and small forward Jeremy Lamb. The Hornets didn’t do enough this offseason to improve their team and could find themselves out of the playoff race next season if they don’t make some additional moves before then. Grade: C-

Western Conference

It’s been a wild offseason in the NBA, with plenty of player movement and a few blockbuster trades. The landscape of the league has changed considerably, and it’s time to take a look at how each team has fared.

In the Western Conference the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets have solidified their positions as the top two teams. The Warriors made a few key additions, including Demarcus Cousins and Jonas Jerebko, while the Rockets added several role players that should help them challenge for the title again.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have also made some significant changes, bringing in Paul George and Carmelo Anthony to play alongside Russell Westbrook It remains to be seen how well this trio will mesh, but they have the potential to be one of the best offenses in the league.

The Minnesota Timberwolves made the biggest splash of any team in the West, acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Chicago Bulls Butler is a significant upgrade at small forward and he should help them challenge for a playoff spot.

The San Antonio Spurs are another team that made some significant changes, trading away Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green in exchange for Demar Derozan and Jakob Poeltl It’s unclear how well this new-look Spurs team will fare, but they should still be a playoff contender.

The Los Angeles Lakers made several moves this offseason, including acquiring Lebron James and signing Lance Stephenson and Rajon Rondo James is obviously the headliner here, and he gives the Lakers a legitimate chance to compete for a title. Stephenson and Rondo are interesting additions that could either help or hurt the team depending on how they mesh with James.

The Los Angeles Clippers had a relatively quiet offseason after missing out on Leonard in Free agency They did make a few solid additions, including Shaun Livingston and Danilo Gallinari, but they’ll need more to compete with the Lakers and Warriors at the top of the conference.

Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors had a very successful offseason, adding a number of key pieces that should help them compete for a championship. They added shooting in the form of Jeremy Lin and Danny Green, as well as size and athleticism with Marc Gasol They also added depth with the signings of Stanley Johnson and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. All in all, it was a very impressive offseason for the Raptors.

Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics are coming off of a disappointing end to their season, losing in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Miami Heat

Despite this early exit, the Celtics had a very successful offseason. They were able to re-sign All-Star point guard Kemba Walker to a four-year, $141 million deal. And they also added veteran center Enes Kanter and swingman Jeff Teague in free agency

With these moves, the Celtics have made themselves title contenders once again. They have one of the best point guards in the league in Walker and an All-Star caliber big man in Kanter. Add in solid role players like Teague and Marcus Smart and this is a team that can compete with anyone in the NBA.

Philadelphia 76ers

It’s tough to grade the Sixers’ offseason. They made a huge splash by signing Al Horford, but they also lost JJ Redick and Jimmy Butler The fact that they were able to keep Tobias Harris is a big plus, but it’s still unclear what their plan is with Ben Simmons Overall, they made some good moves, but they also have some big questions that need to be answered.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks quietly had one of the best offseasons in the NBA. They start with arguably the biggest win, signing Giannis Antetokounmpo to a max contract extension. This keeps Giannis in Milwaukee for at least the next five seasons and makes him the face of the franchise. The Bucks then used their mid-Level Exception to sign center Bobby Portis, who will provide some frontcourt depth behind Giannis and Brook Lopez.

They also traded for Jrue Holiday from the New Orleans Pelicans adding a much-needed perimeter defender and playmaker. The Bucks gave up a lot to get Holiday, but they believe he makes them a championship contender immediately. They also added some veteran depth by signing shooters like D.J. Augustin and Torrey Craig.

The only downside to their offseason was losing center Wesley Matthews, who signed with the Detroit Pistons But overall, the Bucks had a very successful offseason and should be one of the Top Teams in the Eastern Conference next season.

Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers had a solid offseason, adding a few key pieces that should help them compete for a playoff spot in the East.

First, they drafted center Myles Turner with the 11th overall pick. Turner is a very talented big man who has the potential to be a real difference-maker on both ends of the court. He should be a good fit next to star Paul George in the Pacers’ frontcourt.

Second, they traded for point guard George Hill. Hill is a significant upgrade at the point guard position and will provide some much-needed leadership for this young Pacers team.

Overall, the Pacers had a very successful offseason. They added two players who should make an immediate impact and make them a better team.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat had a solid offseason, bringing in some much-needed shooting and adding some young talent. They didn’t make any huge splashes, but they did improve their team.

They started by re-signing Goran Dragic to a big contract. He’s the Heart and Soul of this team, and they need him to be at his best if they want to contend for a title. Then, they added some shooters in Kelly Olynyk and Wayne Ellington. Olynyk will provide some much-needed shooting from the center position, and Ellington is a great fit for their system.

They also drafted Bam Adebayo, who has the potential to be a star in this league. He’s raw offensively, but he’s an elite defender and rebounder. He has all the tools to be a great player in this league, and the Heat are hoping he can reach his full potential.

Overall, the Heat had a good offseason. They didn’t make any huge moves, but they made some solid additions that will help them compete for a title.

Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons had a solid offseason, adding some key pieces that should help them compete for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference

They started by trading for All-Star point guard Derrick Rose who will team up with fellow All-Star big man Blake Griffin to form a dynamic duo in the backcourt. Detroit also signed veterans Markieff Morris and Wayne Ellington, who will provide some much-needed scoring and shooting off the bench.

The Pistons lost some Key Players in free agency including forward Reggie Bullock and center Zaza Pachulia but they brought in enough talent to make up for those losses and then some. Overall, it was a successful offseason for Detroit, and they should be a better team as a result.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers had a busy offseason, as they looked to put themselves in position to compete for an NBA title once again. They made a number of moves, both via trade and free agency that should help them in their quest to reclaim the throne.

In terms of trades, the Cavs acquired forward Jeff Green from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for guard jamal crawford They also picked up center Brendan Haywood and forward/center Mike Miller from the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-team trade that saw forward/center Larry Sanders go to the Bucks.

In free agency the Cavs added guard/forward Lebron James who returns to Cleveland after four seasons with the Miami Heat They also signed forward Shawn Marion, who played last season with the Dallas Mavericks and guard/forward Mike Dunleavy Jr., who spent last season with the Chicago Bulls

With all of these new pieces in place, it will be interesting to see how the Cavs fare this upcoming season They certainly have the talent to make a run at an NBA title but it remains to be seen if they can come together and play well enough to achieve that goal.
