The Bench

The Idaho Basketball team is composed of 14 players, all of whom contribute to the team in their own way. Though some see more court time than others, each player has an important role to play. Below is a brief overview of each member of the team, listed in order of jersey number

The Coaching Staff

The Idaho Men’s basketball team is currently coached by Don Verlin. He is assisted by Zac Claus, Collectively, they have over 50 years of coaching experience.

Don Verlin is in his 11th season as the Vandals’ Head Coach Under his leadership, Idaho has won 21 games in a season four times – most recently in 2018-19. He has taken the Vandals to the postseason five times, including three trips to the college basketball Invitational (CBI) and one appearance each in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).

Zac Claus is in his sixth season as an Assistant Coach at Idaho. He joined the Vandals’ staff in 2014 after serving as an assistant coach at Montana State from 2012-14. Prior to his time in Bozeman, Claus was an assistant coach at UAFS from 2010-12 and a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State from 2008-10.

The Team’s History

The Idaho men’s Basketball team has a long and proud history. The team has been to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament five times and the National Invitation Tournament six times. The team has won conference championships in three different conferences. In recent years the team has been rebuilding under head coach Don Verlin, who led the team to its first ever appearance in the college basketball Invitational in 2017. The team is currently a member of the Big Sky Conference

The Rivalries

In basketball, a rivalry is when two teams have a strong dislike for each other. The University of Idaho has many rivals, but their main rivals are the University of Montana and Gonzaga University. These rivalries are intense and often lead to hard-fought games.

The University of Montana is Idaho’s biggest rival. The two teams have been playing each other since 1903 and they have played each other over 200 times. The series is currently tied at 103-103. The game is often called the “Battle of the Brawl” because it is usually a very physical game Fans from both sides travel to the game to support their team.

Gonzaga University is another big rival of Idaho. The two teams have been playing each other since 1909 and they have played each other over 130 times. Gonzaga currently leads the series 65-61. The games between these two teams are usually very close and intense. Fans from both sides travel to the game to support their team.

The Fans

The Idaho basketball team is fascinating not only for its on-court successes, but also for the passionate and diverse fan base that follows the team. From the die-hard “Superfans” who have been following the team since its inception, to the newer fans who have been drawn in by the team’s recent success, there is a wide range of people who support Idaho basketball. The Arena

The Idaho basketball arena is a historic landmark in the state of Idaho. It was built in 1954 and is the home of the Idaho Vandals men’s basketball team The arena has a capacity of 8,000 people and is one of the smallest arenas in Division I College Basketball Despite its size, the arena is known for its electric atmosphere and has been dubbed “The Pit.”

The Media

The Idaho Basketball Roster is a who’s who of basketball talent from all over the world. The team has players from the United States Canada, France, Italy, and Senegal. The team is coached by former NBA player Lionel Hollins and includes two-time NBA All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire.

The Schedule

The Vandals play basketball in the Western Athletic Conference Their home games are played at the Memorial Gymnasium on the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, Idaho. They are currently coached by Don Verlin.

The Vandals have appeared in three NCAA Division I Tournaments. Their highest seed was #10 in 1988.

The Vandals have appeared in one National Invitation Tournament Their highest seed was #6 in 2009.

The Vandals have appeared in one CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Their highest seed was #7 in 2016.

The Vandals have not yet appeared in the College Basketball Invitational or the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament

The Post-Season

The Idaho men’s basketball team will enter the post-season with a few question marks surrounding the roster. Who will step up in the big moments? Let’s take a look at the team and see who’s who.

Sophomore guard Trevon Allen is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16 points per game He’ll be counted on to score in the post-season, but he’s also capable of distributing the ball and has averaged four assists per game

Junior forward Brayon Blake is one of Idaho’s most versatile players. He can score inside and out, and is a key rebounder for the Vandals, averaging almost seven boards per game.

Senior center Nate Sherwood is Idaho’s best defender and shot blocker. He’ll be tasked with protecting the paint against some of the Western Athletic Conference’s best big men

The Vandals will need solid contributions from their bench in order to make a run in the post-season. Junior guard Pat Dembley and sophomore forward Sam Masten are two players who could see increased minutes off the bench.
