Miami of Ohio hockey can trace its roots back to the early years of the sport. The school fielded its first team in 1898, just two years after the invention of the game. The team was successful from the start, winning the Western Conference championship in its first season.

The school continued to field strong teams in the early years of the sport, winning numerous conference championships In 1921, the team made its first appearance in the National Championship tournament, but was unsuccessful in its quest for a title.

The program really began to take off in the mid-1920s under Head Coach Mel Patten. Patten led the team to four conference championships and three National Championship appearances between 1925 and 1929. The team finally broke through for a national title in 1926, defeating Dartmouth in the Championship game

The 1970s

The 1970s were a decade of great change for the Miami of Ohio Hockey Program After years of competitive hockey in the NCAAs, the team switched to Division I play in 1973. The program enjoyed great success in its new division, appearing in the NCAA tournament six times between 1974 and 1982. In 1975, the team made its first appearance in the Frozen Four, ultimately losing to Michigan in the semifinals. Led by star player Gary Graham, the team made it back to the Frozen Four in 1977, but again fell to Michigan in the semifinal round. But a group of committed alumni, led by former player and Coach Mike Chambers, rallied to save the team. They raised over $1 million to keep the program afloat, and in 1995, Miami joined the newly formed Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

The move to the CCHA proved to be a wise one, as Miami quickly became one of the top teams in the league. In 1996-97, the RedHawks won their first conference championship and made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament The following year, Miami made it all the way to the Frozen Four, losing to eventual National Champion Michigan in the semifinals.

The RedHawks would go on to win six more conference championships in the next decade, cementing their place as one of college hockey’s elite programs. Today, Miami is widely considered to be one of the best places to play college hockey in the country.
