He continued to play baseball through high school and was recruited by several colleges to play at the Division I level. He ultimately chose to attend Clemson University on an academic scholarship.

In four years at Clemson, Stefanic became one of the best hitters in program history. He set school records for home runs (43) and RBIs (172) while leading the team to two College World Series appearances. He was named a First Team All-American after his junior year and was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the fifth round of the 1997 MLB draft
