Morningside College will have a very young but talented basketball roster for the upcoming season

The Mustangs will have just three upperclassmen on the squad, but they will be led by a strong core of five sophomores who gained valuable experience last season.

Sophomore guard Logan O’Farrell is the leading returning scorer after averaging 11.5 points per game last season. O’Farrell is a sharpshooter who made 42 percent of his three-point attempts last season and he will be counted on to provide a spark offensively for the Mustangs.

Fellow sophomore guard Devin Jeffries also returns after averaging 8.4 points and 3.1 assists per game as a freshman. Jeffries is an excellent ball handler who has the ability to penetrate defenses and create scoring opportunities for his teammates.

Sophomore forward Ethan Freidel was Morningside’s leading rebounder last season, averaging 5.9 boards per contest, and he also contributed 7.4 points per game while shooting 52 percent from the field. Freidel will be counted on to be a force inside again this season.

Rounding out the group of returnees are sophomore forward Blake Wiltgen and junior guard Nate Mohr, who both saw significant playing time last season. Wiltgen averaged 5.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while Mohr chipped in with 4.9 points per contest.

Morningside College will have a new head basketball coach this season as Todd Lorensen takes over the program.

The Mustangs will have a strong nucleus of returnees from last year’s squad that posted a 16-13 overall record and finished in fourth place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with an 11-9 mark.

All five starters are back from last year, led by senior point guard Jesse Jansma (6-1, Sioux Center, Iowa), who averaged 12.2 points, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game while shooting 41 percent from three-point range last season.

Led by seniors Jakeeenan Gant, Tyrese Haliburton and Cam Sterling, Morningside will be one of the most experienced teams in the country. All five senior starters are averaging double-figures in scoring, with Gant leading the way at 20 points per game

Haliburton is one of the best all-around players in the country and is averaging a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists per game Sterling is a dynamic scorer who is averaging 19 points per game The other two senior starters are Trey Brown (15 points per game) and Dalvin Burditt (12 points per game).

The juniors will also be key contributors for the Mustangs this season. Guard Khalil Tate is averaging 17 Points per game while big men Isaiah Harrison (14 points per game) and Xavier Sneed (10 points per game) provide size and athleticism in the frontcourt.

The freshman class features several highly touted prospects who are expected to make an immediate impact. point guard Jared Butler is one of the top recruits in the country and he is averaging 15 points per game Forward Jaden Shackelford is another top recruit who is averaging 13 points per game. Guard Josh Green rounds out the freshman class and he is contributing 11 points per game.

With a deep and experienced roster, Morningside College will be one of the favorites to win the National Championship this season. Be sure to catch them in action!

The team will be led by seniors Aaron Johnson and Tyler Zerothe, who are both returning starters. They will be joined by junior Myles Hurst, who returns to the team after taking a year off. The new faces on the team include freshman point guard Dylon Hooper and transfer student Micah Pegues.
