Blacks have been playing Professional Basketball since the early 1900s, but it was not until 1950 that Earl Lloyd became the first African American to play in an NBA game Since then, numerous black players have made a name for themselves in the league. In 1971, Spencer Haywood became the first Black Player to be drafted into the NBA straight out of High School He would go on to win an Olympic gold medal with the United States men’s basketball team in 1972.
One of the most iconic players in NBA history is Michael Jordan He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1984 and quickly became one of the league’s premier players. Jordan was named Rookie of the Year and went on to win six NBA championships with the Bulls. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Another player who has had a tremendous impact on the game is Lebron James He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003 and instantly became one of the team’s most important players. In 2010, James helped lead the Cavaliers to their first ever NBA Finals appearance. He would later leave Cleveland for Miami, where he won two more championships with the Heat. James returned to Cleveland in 2014 and led the Cavaliers to their first ever NBA title in 2016.
Kobe Bryant is another player who has left his mark on the game of basketball He was drafted by Charlotte in 1996 but quickly traded to Los Angeles where he would spend his entire 20-year career with the Lakers. nt Won five NBA Championships with Los Angeles and was named Most Valuable Player in 2008. He is also one of only four players in NBA history to score more than 30,000 points during his career.

The first African American player in the NBA was Earl Lloyd, who joined the Washington Capitols in October 1950. Lloyd, who was born in 1928, played three seasons in the league and was a defensive specialist known for his tenacious rebounding. He averaged 8.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game during his career.
In 1951, Chuck Cooper became the first black player to be drafted by an NBA team when he was selected by the Boston Celtics in the second round. Cooper, who was born in 1926, played six seasons in the league and averaged 8.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game He is also remembered for his charitable work off the court; he was one of the founders of the National basketball players Association (NBPA) and helped establish a pension plan for NBA players
Willis Reed, who was born in 1942, joined the New York Knicks in 1964 and quickly became one of the league’s top players He was named Rookie of the Year in 1965 and went on to be named MVP in 1970 and 1974. He is best remembered for his heroic performance in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals when he played despite a debilitating leg injury to lead the Knicks to victory over the Los Angeles Lakers Reed retired in 1974 with a career average of 18.7 points per game

As part of its celebration, the NBA is spotlighting some of the top black players in league history. Among them are Earl Lloyd, Chuck Cooper and Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, who were the first African Americans to play in the NBA.
Lloyd made his debut with the Washington Capitals in 1950, Cooper joined the Boston Celtics in 1950 and Clifton debuted with the New York Knicks in 1951. All three players overcame tremendous obstacles to achieve their dreams of playing professional basketball

When the NBA was founded in 1946, no black players were on any of the teams. It would be another four years before the color barrier was broken and Earl Lloyd became the first black player in the NBA. Since then, the contributions of black players to the game of basketball and to the NBA have been immeasurable. Every year during Black History Month, the NBA spotlights some of the top black players in league history. Earl Lloyd – A three-time All-Star, Lloyd was one of the first African-American players in the NBA. He played for nine seasons with the Washington Capitals and helped lead them to the NBA Finals in 1955.
Elgin Baylor – A two-time All-Star, Baylor was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history He played 14 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and is one of only four players to score more than 70 points in a game. He was also a five-time All-NBA First Team selection.
Wilt Chamberlain – A five-time All-Star, Chamberlain is one of only six players to score more than 30,000 points in his career. He also holds several individual records, including single-game records for points (100) and rebounds (55). Chamberlain played for 12 seasons with three different teams and won two NBA championships (1967 and 1972).
Oscar Robertson – A three-time All-Star, Robertson is one of only two players to average a triple-double for an entire season. He played 14 seasons in the NBA and is considered one of the greatest all-around players in league history. Robertson was a member of The Cincinnati Royals from 1960 to 1970 and won an NBA Championship with them in 1971.
Bill Russell – A five-time All-Star, Russell is considered one of the greatest Defensive Players in NBA history He played 13 seasons with The Boston Celtics and was a key member of their dynasty that won 11 NBA championships between 1957 and 1969. Russell was also a three-time MVP (1958, 1961 and 1962) and a 12-time All-Defensive team selection.

The Rise of Black Coaches in the NBA
Since the National Basketball Association (NBA) was established in 1946, there have been a number of accomplishments by black coaches. In 1974, Frank Layden became the first black head coach in the NBA when he was hired by the Utah Jazz Layden would go on to win Coach of the Year in 1984. Twelve years later, in 1986, Lenny Wilkens was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame becoming the first black coach to receive such an honor. In 1999, Doc Rivers became the first black Head Coach to win an NBA Championship when his team, the San Antonio Spurs, defeated the New York Knicks in five games.
Today, there are eight black head coaches in the NBA: Dwane Casey (Toronto Raptors), J.B. Bickerstaff (Memphis Grizzlies), Alvin Gentry (New Orleans Pelicans), Lloyd Pierce (Atlanta Hawks), Michael Malone (Denver Nuggets), Nate McMillan (Indiana Pacers), Earl Watson (Phoenix Suns), and Cory Joseph (Sacramento Kings).
