Isiah Lord Thomas III (born April 30, 1961) is an American former professional basketball player who played point guard for the Detroit Pistons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Thomas played collegiately for the Indiana Hoosiers leading them to the 1981 NCAA championship as a sophomore and declaring for the NBA draft that same year. He was drafted by the Pistons with the second overall pick in the 1981 draft. Thomas made immediate impact with the Pistons, becoming one of the youngest winners of the NBA Rookie of the Year Award at age 20. He was named an All-Star in each of his first 13 seasons, was co-captain of both the Eastern Conference and Detroit Pistons All-Star Teams multiple times, and was voted as captain of Detroit’s “Bad Boys” teams.

In 1990–91, Thomas led Detroit to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1956, becoming one of only three players to lead a team to back-to-back Finals Appearances as a player before becoming a Head Coach (joining Magic Johnson and Bill Russell). After winning back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990, Thomas was co-recipient of the 1991 NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award with Dennis Rodman In 2000, he retired as a player after 14 seasons with Detroit.

Since his playing career ended, Thomas has been an executive with various organizations; he served as head coach and president of basketball operations for Indiana Pacers then as president and part owner for Toronto Raptors television commentator for NBC’s The Isiah Factor: Unemployment Now!, Head Coach at Florida International University (FIU), and most recently as an analyst on ESPN’s NBA Countdown

This weekend, NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Thomas, who played for the Detroit Pistons from 1981 to 1994, was a 12-time All-Star and led the Pistons to back-to-back NBA championships in 1989 and 1990.

In 2008, he became head coach of the Florida National University men’s basketball team In his three seasons as FIU’s head coach Thomas led the team to one NCAA tournament appearance and two Conference USA tournament appearances. He was fired from FIU in 2012 amid allegations of NCAA violations.

In 2015, he was hired as an analyst for ESPN’s NBA Countdown show. He has also worked as a commentator for Turner Sports’ coverage of the NBA.

Thomas is the founder of the Isiah Thomas Foundation, which provides support to inner-City Youth in Chicago, and he is also a board member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago. In 2010, he was instrumental in helping to open the Isiah International Leadership Academy, a public Charter School in Chicago that provides a high-quality education to students from under-resourced communities.

In addition to his work with youth, Thomas has also been an active supporter of multiple causes related to mental health and substance abuse. He has served on the board of directors for the National mental health Association and was a founding member of both The Fashion Delivers Foundation and The Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition.
