NBA Teams That Have Come Back from Being Down 3-0

In the NBA, no team has ever come back from being down 3-0 in a seven-game series.

But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at three NBA teams that have come back from being down 3-0 in a seven-game series.

NBA Teams that have come back from being down 3-0

In the history of the NBA, only 8 teams have come back from being down 3 games to 0. The Boston Celtics did it in 1981 against the Philadelphia
76ers. The Los Angeles Lakers did it in 2000 against the Portland Trail Blazers The Detroit Pistons did it in 2005 against the Miami Heat The San Antonio Spurs did it in 2006 against the Denver Nuggets The Phoenix Suns did it in 2007 against the Los Angeles Lakers The Houston Rockets did it in 2015 against the Los Angeles Clippers And finally, the Cleveland Cavaliers did it in 2016 against the Golden State Warriors

Why these teams were able to come back

In the history of the NBA, there have been only three teams that have come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven-game series. The Portland Trail Blazers were the first team to do it in the 1970 playoffs against the Los Angeles Lakers The Denver Nuggets accomplished the feat in the 1994 playoffs against the Utah Jazz and the most recent team to do it were the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2015 playoffs against…the San Antonio Spurs.

What do all three of these teams have in common? More importantly, what can current NBA teams down 3-0 in a series learn from them?

All three teams had at least two All-Stars on their roster. The 1970 Blazers had Geoff Petrie and Sidney Wicks, while Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter were All-Stars for the ’92-’93 Trail Blazers squad. As for the Nuggets, they had Dikembe Mutombo and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf in 1994, with Mutombo being named Defensive Player of the Year that season. The Clippers had Blake Griffin and Chris Paul on their roster in 2015.

It’s also worth noting that all three of these teams had a player who would eventually have his jersey retired by the franchise: Wicks for Portland, Drexler for Houston, and Mutombo for Denver.

Looking at those All-Star rosters, it’s no surprise that each team had at least one player who could take over a game when needed. In 1970, it was Petrie averaging 28 points while shooting 50 percent from field goal range. Against Utah in 1994, it was Abdul-Rauf averaging 19 points and shooting 46 percent from three-point range In 2015, Paul averaged 21 points and nine assists while shooting 47 percent from three-point range himself.

The other thing that these teams had in common was that they were able to put together complete team efforts when necessary. In Game 7 against Los Angeles in 1970, six different Portland players scored at least 13 points as they cruised to a 119-108 victory. Against Utah 20 years later, eight different Nuggets scored in double figures as they won 126-115 in Game 7. When facing elimination again at home against San Antonio last season, all five Clippers starters scored at least 20 points en route to a 112-101 victory.

If there’s one final commonality between these teams, it’s that they each went on to lose in the next round despite their miraculous comebacks. Despite that fact, what they did will always be remembered as some of the most impressive comebacks ever seen in NBA history

What this means for other teams down 3-0

In the history of the NBA playoffs teams that have been down 3-0 in a best-of-seven series have gone on to win the series just three times. Twice this has happened in the first round and once in the Finals.

The most recent team to do it was the Cleveland Cavaliers who came back from being down 3-0 to the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals

The other teams to do it are the Boston Celtics who came back from being down 3-0 to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 1981 playoffs, and the Los Angeles Lakers who came back from being down 3-0 to the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the 2006 playoffs.

What this means for other teams down 3-0 is that they still have a chance, but it is a very slim one.

What other comebacks can we expect in the NBA

In the NBA, a team down 3-0 in a series has never come back to win it. NBA teams that have come back from being down 2-0 in a series are just slightly more successful, with only six of those teams going on to win the series. Here are those six teams:

--Los Angeles Lakers 2000 Western Conference Finals
--Boston Celtics 1981 Eastern Conference Semifinals
-New York Knicks 1953 Eastern Division Finals
Indiana Pacers 1995 Eastern Conference Semifinals
--Houston Rockets 1995 Western Conference Semifinals
--Denver Nuggets 1994 Western Conference First Round

What teams are currently down 3-0

As of right now, there are zero teams down 3-0.

How likely is it for a team to come back from being down 3-0

In the NBA, it is very rare for a team to come back from being down 3-0 in a series. In fact, it has only happened twice in the history of the league. The most recent instance was in 2016, when the Cleveland Cavaliers came back to beat the Golden State Warriors The other time it happened was in 1951, when the Syracuse Nationals came back to beat the New York Knickerbockers

So, while it is possible for a team to come back from being down 3-0, it is very unlikely. If you are a fan of a team that is down 3-0 in a series, you should not hold out much hope that they will be able to come back and win.

What do the stats say about teams down 3-0

Since the NBA adopted the best-of-seven playoff format in 1984, only five teams have come back from being down 0-3 to win a series: the 2005“`

What are the odds of a team coming back from being down 3-0

In the NBA, there have been a total of 31 playoff series in which a team has been down 3-0. Of those 31 series, only one team has come back to win the series (the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Philadelphia
76ers in 1981). Therefore, the odds of a team coming back from being down 3-0 in a best-of-seven NBA Playoff series are approximately 3.2%.

What are the chances of a team coming back from being down 3-0

In the NBA, a team down 3-0 in a best of seven series has never come back to win the series. In the NHL, it’s happened three times. But in Major League Baseball it’s happenedtwice in history — the most recent being the Boston Red Sox’ comeback against the New York Yankees in the 2004 ALCS.

The fact that it’s happened at all is pretty amazing, especially considering that no team has ever come back from being down 3-0 in an NBA Playoff series. So what are the chances of it happening?

Well, let’s take a look at some numbers. In the NBA, there have been 128 playoff series where one team has had a 3-0 lead. In those 128 series, that team has gone on to win 116 times, or 90.6 percent of the time.

So, if we take those 116 wins and divide them by the total number of possible outcomes (128), we get what’s known as the probability of winning a best of seven series after having a 3-0 lead — which works out to be 0.90625, or roughly 91 percent.

In other words, if we were to randomly pick 100 teams that have been down 3-0 in an NBA Playoff series, about 91 of them would go on to lose the series while only nine would come back to win it. Those aren’t great odds for any team down 3-0, but they’re especially bleak for an NBA team since no one has ever come back from that deficit to win a playoff series.

Is it possible for a team to come back from being down 3-0

In the NBA, it is possible for a team to come back from being down 3-0. This has happened multiple times in the playoffs, most recently in the 2016 Western Conference Finals when the Golden State Warriors came back to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder
