Who are the NC State basketball Coaches?
NC State Basketball coaches are a group of highly experienced and successful college basketball coaches. The current head coach is Kevin Keatts, who is in his third season with the Wolfpack. Prior to coming to NC State, Coach Keatts was the Head Coach at UNC Wilmington where he led the Seahawks to two consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championships.
Assistant coaches Tony Bennett and Dwayne Stephens have a combined total of over 30 years of experience coaching Division I Basketball Bennett is in his second season with the Wolfpack, while Stephens is in his first. Both coaches have significant experience recruiting and developing talent, and they will be integral to the success of the team moving forward.
Other members of the Coaching Staff include director of operations Koby McEwen, video coordinator Sam Holtzman, and Strength and Conditioning Coach Mike Burnham. These individuals all play important roles in supporting the team and helping it to be successful both on and off the court.
What are their backgrounds?
The NC State Basketball Coaches are a group of experienced and successful coaches who have a passion for the game of basketball They have worked at all levels of the game, from High School to the professional ranks, and have won championships at every level.
Coach Mark Gottfried is in his sixth season as the Head coach of the NC State men’s Basketball team He has led the team to four NCAA tournament appearances, including two Sweet Sixteen appearances, and has a career record of193-122. Prior to coming to NC State, Coach Gottfried was the head coach at Alabama for 11 seasons, where he led the team to five NCAA Tournament appearances and one Sweet Sixteen appearance.
Coach Wes Moore is in his fifth season as the head coach of the NC State women’s basketball team He has led the team to four NCAA tournament appearances, including two Sweet Sixteen appearances, and has a career record of158-74. Prior to coming to NC State, Coach Moore was the head coach at Gardner-Webb for six seasons, where he led the team to one NCAA tournament appearance.
Coach Kevin Keatts is in his third season as the head coach of the NC State men’s Basketball team He has led the team to two NCAA tournament appearances, including one Sweet Sixteen appearance, and has a career record of 98-58. Prior to coming to NC State, Coach Keatts was the head coach at UNC Wilmington for three seasons, where he led the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances and one CAA Championship.
How did they come to coaching?
It is well known that many coaches at the collegiate and professional levels did not start out intending to be coaches. They may have played the sport themselves, but coaching was not their initial focus. So, how did these men end up becoming the leaders of their teams? Let’s take a look at the backgrounds of some of the NC State Basketball Coaches to see how they came to be where they are today.
Head coach Kevin Keatts played college basketball at Hargrave Military Academy and then went on to UNC-Wilmington, where he was a part of the Seahawks’ Colonial Athletic Association championship team in 1996. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Southwestern Virginia Community College before moving on to Hargrave Military Academy, where he was Head Coach for 12 years. In 2012, Keatts was hired as an Assistant Coach at Louisville, where he spent four seasons before being named head coach at NC State in 2017.
Assistant coach Steve Robinson also played College Basketball but his road to coaching was a little different. After graduating from Clemson in 1984, Robinson began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater under head coach Rick Barnes. He then moved on to Western Carolina where he was an assistant for six years before becoming head coach in 1994. Robinson held that position for five years before returning to Clemson as an assistant under Larry Shyatt in 1999. He remained at Clemson until 2002 when he joined George Karl’s staff with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant. After one season with the Bucks, Robinson returned to college coaching as an associate Head Coach under Eddie Biedenbach at UNC-Asheville, where he stayed until 2005 when he joined Roy Williams’ staff at North Carolina In 2011, Robinson rejoined Barnes’ staff at Texas before coming to NC State in 2017
What makes them successful?
In order to be a successful basketball coach one must have a plethora of skills and characteristics. Some of these qualities are the ability to manage a team, excellent communication skills, motivational tactics, and the ability to recruit star players However, what makes each coach unique is how they utilize these skills to create a winning culture within their program.
The North Carolina State Basketball Coaching Staff consists of four different coaches, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. However, they all share one common goal: to win games and compete for championships. Here is a closer look at each member of the coaching staff and what makes them successful.
What do they bring to the team?
The current NC State Coaching Staff includes head coach Kevin Keatts and Assistant coaches Dwayne Anderson, Transferred from Louisville, Mike Reed and Steve Bucknall.
Keatts was hired in 2017 to replace Mark Gottfried, who was fired after the team finished with a 15-17 record. Keatts had previously been the head coach at UNC Wilmington, where he compiled a 72-28 record in three seasons.
Anderson joined the staff in 2018 after Keatts was hired. He has over 20 years of coaching experience, including stops at Louisville, Ohio State and Boston College
Reed joined the staff in 2019 after serving as an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington under Keatts. He also has experience coaching at George Mason and VCU.
Bucknall joined the staff in 2019 after spending time as a player development coach with the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets He also has experience coaching in Australia and England.
What is their coaching philosophy?

The Women’s basketball team is coached by Wes Moore He was hired in 2019 and his vision for the team is to create a “championship culture”. He wants his players to work hard and be successful on and off the court.
How do they motivate the team?
The North Carolina State University men’s Basketball team is coached by Kevin Keatts. Prior to coaching at NC State, Keatts was the head coach of men’s basketball at UNC Wilmington.
Under Keatts, the Wolfpack have had two winning seasons and have made the NCAA Tournament twice. In 2019, NC State upset #2 seed Houston in the first round of the NCAA tournament

Prior to Keatts, Gottfried coached the Wolfpack from 2011 to 2017. During his time at NC State, Gottfried led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, including two Sweet Sixteen appearances.
Gottfried was known for his calm demeanor and for being a Players’ Coach. He motivated his team by building relationships with them and helping them to understand their role within the context of the team.

Head coach Kevin Keatts is in his third season with the Wolfpack. He’s known for his up-tempo, pressing style of play. assistant coach Tony Bennett is in his first season with the team. He’s known for his focus on defense.
Both coaches have led their teams to success on the court. Under Keatts, the Wolfpack has made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, and they’re currently ranked No. 4 in the nation. Bennett’s defenses have been among the best in the country for several years.
So what does each coach bring to the table? Keatts is known for his high-energy style and ability to Motivate his players. Bennett is known for his attention to detail and game planning. Both coaches are excellent at what they do, and they’ve had a lot of success at NC State.

Robinson is known for his defensive coaching ability. He has helped several teams have success on the defensive end of the court throughout his career.
