As the college Basketball season nears its end, it’s time to take a look at the top Oklahoma Basketball Coaches

Billy Tubbs- A true pioneer of the game

Billy Tubbs is a true pioneer of the game of basketball He was one of the first coaches to really utilize the Full Court press and his teams were some of the highest scoring in the country. He coached at Oklahoma for 11 seasons and led them to the Final Four in 1988. After his time at Oklahoma, he coached at TCU for four seasons before retiring.

Sherri Coale- A modern day legend

Sherri Coale is a modern day legend. She has been the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma since 1996. In that time, she has led the Sooners to 17 NCAA tournaments, including five trips to the Sweet Sixteen and two to the Elite Eight. She was also named the National Coach of the Year in 2009.

Jeff Capel- A young up and comer

Jeff Capel is one of the top Ung Basketball coaches in the country. He has been successful at every stop in his coaching career.

He was Head Coach at Oklahoma for three seasons, from 2006 to 2009. In his first season, the Sooners went 27-8 and made it to the NCAA tournament They made it to the Sweet Sixteen in his second season and the Elite Eight in his third season.

After a successful three-year run at Oklahoma, Capel took over at Duke, where he coached for seven seasons. His teams went 158-110 and made the NCAA Tournament five times. His best season came in 2014-15, when Duke went 35-4 and made it to the Sweet Sixteen.

Capel is now head coach at Pitt, where he has coached for the last two seasons. His teams have gone 33-29 and made the NCAA tournament once.

Capel is a native of Virginia Beach Virginia. He played point guard at Duke from 1994 to 1998.

Scott Brooks A true player’s coach

Oklahoma City Thunder Head Coach Scott Brooks is known as a true “player’s coach.” He played college basketball at the University of Texas at San Antonio and then spent time playing professionally in Europe and the CBA. He knows what it takes to be a successful player, and he uses that knowledge to help his players reach their potential.

Brooks took over as Head coach of the Thunder in 2008, and he has led the team to six straight playoff appearances. His teams have always been known for their hard work and dedication, and that has helped them achieve success on the court.

Under Brooks, the Thunder have established themselves as one of the top teams in the Western Conference They have won five division titles and made it to the NBA Finals in 2012. They are always a tough team to beat, and that is thanks in large part to their coach.

Lon Kruger- A class act

Lon Kruger is a class act. He was born in Silver Lake, Kansas and raised in Elmwood, Nebraska. He played college basketball at Kansas State University from 1970-1974. Coach Kruger began his coaching career in 1976 as a head coach at Southeast Missouri State

In his first season as a head coach he led the Otahkians to the NCAA Division II Final Four. In five seasons at Southeast Missouri, Coach Kruger compiled a record of 112-76 (.596). He took the Atlanta Hawks job in 2000. In his two seasons with the Hawks, he had a 48-116 (.293) record.

His next stop was the UNLV Rebels from 2004-2011. In his seven seasons at UNLV, Coach Kruger had a 161-103 (.609) record and led the team to four NCAA tournament appearances, including one Sweet Sixteen appearance. He left UNLV to take the head coaching job at Oklahoma in 2011.

In his eight seasons with the Sooners, Coach Kruger has compiled a 176-110 (.615) record and has led Oklahoma to six NCAA tournament appearances, including one Final Four appearance in 2016. Coach Kruger is a class act and one of the best Basketball coaches in Oklahoma history.

Kelvin Sampson A fiery competitor

Kelvin Sampson is a former American college basketball coach who was most recently the head coach of the University Houston Cougars men’s basketball team He was also previously the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers Oklahoma Sooners and Washington Huskies

Sampson is known for his intense coaching style and his ability to get the most out of his players. He is also known for his recruiting prowess, which has led to him being one of the most successful coaches in the country.

Sampson began his coaching career at Montclair State University before moving on to the University of Oklahoma, where he spent 12 years as an Assistant Coach He then spent two years as the head coach at Washington State University before returning to Oklahoma to take over as the Head Coach of the Sooners in 1995.

Under Sampson, Oklahoma won five conference championships and made it to the NCAA Tournament eleven times, including a Final Four appearance in 2002.

In 2006, Sampson was hired by Indiana University to replace Mike Davis as the head coach of the Hoosiers. During his time at Indiana, Sampson led the Hoosiers to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a Sweet Sixteen appearance.

However, Sampson’s time at Indiana was marred by an NCAA investigation into impermissible phone calls made by Sampson and his staff to recruits. As a result of the investigation, Sampson was fired from Indiana in 2008.

After a brief hiatus from coaching, Sampson returned to coaching in 2009 when he was hired by Thecssa Community College as an assistant coach In 2011, he returned to Division I Basketball when he was hired by Houston as their head coach

In his six seasons at Houston, Sampson has led the Cougars to four NCAA tournament appearances and two conference championships.

Billy Donovan A proven winner

Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan is a proven winner. In his five years at the helm of the Thunder, Donovan has led the team to five consecutive playoff appearances, including two trips to the Western Conference Finals.Under Donovan, the Thunder have won 50 or more games three times, and reached the 60-win mark once.

Donovan has also helped develop some of the Thunder’s young stars such as point guard Russell Westbrook and center Steven Adams Westbrook was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2017 under Donovan’s tutelage, and Adams has emerged as one of the best young centers in the league.

Travis Ford- A young gun

In his five years at Oklahoma State Travis Ford has stamped his identity on the program. The former Kentucky point guard has instilled a fast-paced, up-tempo style of play that has produced some gaudy numbers. The Cowboys have averaged over 80 points per game in each of Ford’s five seasons, highlighted by a school-record 87.9 per game in 2013-14. Oklahoma State has also set a school mark for made 3-pointers in four of the last five years.

Dave Bliss- A true pioneer

Dave Bliss was the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1987 to 1990. He compiled a record of 52-35 (.598) in his three seasons at OU. Bliss guided the Sooners to one NCAA Tournament appearance and two National Invitation Tournament appearances. In 1989, he was named Big Eight Coach of the Year after leading OU to a 22-9 overall record and a second-place finish in the conference with an 11-5 mark.

Eddie Sutton- A true legend

Oklahoma is home to some of the best basketball coaches in the country. Eddie Sutton is one of those coaches. He is a true legend in the world of basketball. Sutton coached at Oklahoma State University for 21 years, winning more games than any other coach in school history. He is also one of only four coaches to take three different schools to the NCAA Tournament
