The History of Ohio State Field Hockey

Ohio State Field hockey is one of the most successful programs in the Midwest. The Buckeyes have won 12 conference championships and made 11 NCAA tournament appearances. The program has also produced two Olympians, Susie MacDonald and Amy Bennett.

The Buckeyes began play in 1974 under Head Coach Mary Stoltzfus. The team had its first winning season in 1977, finishing with a record of 10-6. The Buckeyes won their first Conference Championship in 1979, sharing the title with Michigan.

In 1981, Ohio State made its first NCAA Tournament appearance, losing to eventual National Champion Iowa in the Opening Round The Buckeyes returned to the tournament in 1982 and 1983, but lost in the first round both times.

The Buckeyes broke through to the NCAA semifinals in 1984, losing to eventual national champion North Carolina Ohio State made another appearance in the semifinals in 1985, but again lost to North Carolina

The Buckeyes won their first NCAA tournament game in 1986, defeating Wake Forest 3-2 in overtime in the opening round. Ohio State then lost to North Carolina 2-1 in double overtime in the quarterfinals.

The Buckeyes made another NCAA tournament appearance in 1987, but lost to Old Dominion 1-0 in the opening round. Ohio State did not make another NCAA tournament appearance until 1991, when they lost to Connecticut 1-0 in overtime in the opening round.

The Buckeyes finally broke through to the NCAA semifinals again in 1992, defeating Old Dominion 3-2 and Connecticut 2-1 before falling to eventual national champion Iowa 3-2. Ohio State made another appearance in the NCAA semifinals In 1993 before losing 5-4 to Virginia Commonwealth University

Defenders:

-Senior JulieDiBenedetto has been exceptional in net this season, posting eight shutouts in 20 games played She’s a vocal leader on the field and always keeps her cool under pressure.
-Junior Sarah Lemke is DiBenedetto’s backup, but she’s seen plenty of action this season as well. In seven Games Played she has five shutouts of her own.
