From high school to the pros

Terrell Brown always dreamed of playing in the NBA. As a kid growing up in Mobile, Alabama, he would spend hours shooting hoops in his driveway, imagining himself nailing game-winning shots in front of a roaring crowd.

Now, that dream is a reality. Brown is in his rookie season with the Phoenix Suns and he’s loving every minute of it.

“It’s been a surreal experience, for sure,” he says. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity to live out my childhood dream.”

Brown’s journey to the NBA started long before he suited up for his first game. He honed his skills at LeFlore Magnet high school where he was a star player on the varsity team From there, he went on to play college basketball at the University of Pittsburgh.

Then, last year, he declared for the NBA draft And when his name was called on draft night, he knew his hard work had paid off.

“It was an unbelievable feeling,” he says. “I just remember being so happy and excited and grateful.”

Now, Brown is settling into life as an NBA player He’s still getting used to all the travel and the intense competition, but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I love everything about this job,” he says. “It’s a dream come true.”

Brown’s path to the NBA

Terrell Brown, a 6-foot-7 wing from Los Angeles had to take a unconventional path to the NBA. Brown went to a junior college then a Division II school, and was undrafted out of UMBC. He signed with the Suns in 2019 after impressing in the G League.

Brown is one of the few players in NBA history to come from a lower division school. He is also relatively old for an NBA player at 27 years old. Brown has had to grind his whole life to get where he is today.

“I feel like I’m just getting started,” he said. “I feel like I have a lot more to prove.”

He would go on to play for the Chicago Bulls Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks over the next decade.
