Introducing the U of M Hockey Roster
The U of M Hockey Team is made up of some of the most talented and skilled student-athletes in the country. Get to know them better with this quick introduction to the team.
Forwards
Dylan Larkin – A junior from Waterford, Michigan, Larkin is the player to watch on the U of M Hockey team He’s an offensive powerhouse and has already set several school records. He was also named the Big Ten player of the year in 2016.
Maxwell Humitz – A sophomore from Livonia, Michigan, Humitz is a versatile forward who isn’t afraid to get physical on the ice. He’s a key player on both the offensive and defensive end.
Nick Boka – A junior from St. Paul, Minnesota, Boka is a strong two-way player who provides a lot of energy on the ice. He’s a key member of the penalty kill unit and is always one of the first players back on defense.
Defensemen
Alex Green – A senior from Lansing, Michigan, Green is the captain of the U of M hockey team He’s a steady presence on defense and has a knack for making big plays in key moments.
Griffin Luce – A junior from Howell, Michigan, Luce is a physical defenseman who isn’t afraid to mix it up in front of the net. He’s an excellent shot blocker and takes pride in his defensive play.
Sam Piazza – A sophomore from Dearborn Heights, Michigan, Piazza is an up-and-coming defenseman with a lot of promise. He’s an excellent skater and has a knack for jumping into the play offensively.
Forwards
The University of Michigan men’s Hockey Team is made up of forwards, defensemen, and goalies. Each player has a specific role on the team, and each line is responsible for different things on the ice.
Forwards are the players who skate up and down the ice, trying to score goals They are usually divided into three lines: the first line, or top line, is typically the best offensive players on the team; the second line is responsible for scoring goals and Playing Defense and the third line is mostly Defensive Players There are also fourth line players, who are typically used less than the other lines.
Goalies are the players who stay in front of the net and try to stop the other team from scoring. Defensemen are responsible for helping the goalie and for stopping the other team from skating into our zone.
Defensemen
Defensemen (or “D”) are the players on a Hockey Team who defend the goal and prevent the opposing team from scoring. Defensemen typically stay near their own goal, in front of the goaltender, and help to clear the puck out of their defensive zone when necessary.
The University of Michigan Wolverines Hockey Team has eight defensemen on their roster for the 2020-2021 Season Here’s a closer look at each one:

Goaltenders
The University of Minnesota men’s Hockey team is composed of some of the best young talent in the sport. In between the pipes, the team has two outstanding goaltenders who are sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats all season long
Jack LaFontaine is a freshman from Eden Prairie Minnesota. He was a 4-time All-State selection in High School and led his team to 2 State Championships LaFontaine was also named Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey in 2018.
Mat Robson is a sophomore from Toronto, Ontario. He was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Year last season after posting a .936 save percentage and 10-2-1 record in conference play
Coaching Staff
The University of Michigan’s hockey coaching staff is among the most experienced and successful in the country. Head Coach Mel Pearson is in his second season at the helm of the Wolverines, and he is joined by associate head coach Bill Muckalt and assistant coaches Kris Mayotte and Ben Langfeld.
Pearson was an Assistant Coach at Michigan for 22 years before taking over as Head Coach in 2017. He helped the Wolverines win two National Championships as an assistant (1996 and 1998), and he has been a part of three more championship teams as a Head coach (2007, 2011, and 2017). In all, Pearson has appeared in 14 frozen fours (seven as a head coach seven as an assistant) and has won championships at every level of hockey, from junior player to collegiate head coach
Muckalt is in his second season on Pearson’s staff after serving as an assistant for one year at his alma mater, Northern Michigan University A former NHL player Muckalt won a Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 2000. He also played for the Vancouver Canucks New York Islanders Minnesota Wild and Nashville Predators during his 10-year NHL career
Mayotte is in his third season on Pearson’s staff and his fifth overall at Michigan. He helped the Wolverines win a National Championship as an assistant in 2018 before being promoted to associate head coach prior to the start of the 18-19 season A former goaltender, Mayotte played professionally for several years before getting into coaching. He also served as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence University for four seasons before coming to Michigan.
Langfeld is also entering his third season on Pearson’s staff and his fifth overall at Michigan. He served as video coordinator for two seasons before being promoted to assistant coach prior to the start of the 2018-19 season. A former player, Langfeld appeared in two games for the Wolverines during his college career before embarking on a professional career that lasted 11 seasons.
Team Captains
This year’s University of Minnesota hockey team is made up of a mix of experienced veterans and talented newcomers. The team captains are:
-Forwards: Jack Connolly and Nate Condon
-Defensemen:Brady Skjei and Seth Helgeson
-Goalie: Josh Hobby
Key Players to Watch
As the season approaches, fans are eager to see how their favorite team will do. For the University of Michigan Hockey Team there are a few Key Players to watch.
Forwards:
Max Jones is a sophomore from Brighton, Michigan. He was the 2016 first-Round Draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks and is expected to be a top player for the Wolverines this season.
Cooper Marody is a junior from Great Falls Montana. He led the team in scoring last season with 41 points and was named an All-American.
Defensemen:
Luke Martin is a freshman from St. Louis, Missouri. He was drafted in the second round by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2017 and is expected to make an immediate impact on the blue line
Quinn Hughes is a freshman from Orlando, Florida. He was drafted in the first round by the Vancouver Canucks in 2018 and is considered one of the best defenseman in his class.
Newcomers to the Team
This year’s University of Minnesota men’s hockey team has some new faces that fans will want to get to know. Here are some quick facts about the newcomers to the team:
-Casey Mittelstadt is a freshman forward from Eden Prairie Minnesota. He was drafted 8th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2017 NHL Draft
-Dylan Samberg is a freshman defenseman from Hermantown, Minnesota. He was drafted 43rd overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2017 NHL Draft
-Brady Ziemer is a sophomore forward from Calgary, Alberta. He played Junior hockey for the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League before coming to Minnesota.
-Jack Ramsey is a freshman forward from Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was drafted 208th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2018 NHL Draft
Farewell to Seniors
The University of Michigan men’s hockey team will say farewell to seven seniors this season. These seven men have been a part of the team for four years, and they have helped the team to some of its biggest successes in recent years Here is a brief look at each of the seniors on the roster:
Forward Luke Glendening is the team captain and has been a key player for the Wolverines over the past four years. He is a hard worker and a leader on and off the ice, and he will be missed by his teammates.
Forward Greg Pateryn is another solid player who has been a key contributor to the team’s success over the past four years. He is a physical player who is not afraid to stick up for his teammates, and he will be missed by his teammates.
Defenseman Jon Merrill is another one of the team’s Top Players He is a very talented player who has been a big part of the team’s success over the past four years. He will be missed by his teammates, but they know that he has a bright future ahead of him.
Defenseman Kevin Clare is another physical player who has been a big part of the team’s success over the past four years. He is not afraid to stick up for his teammates, and he will be missed by his teammates.
Goaltender Steve Racine has been a big part of the team’s success over the past four years. He is a very talented goaltender who has played well in big games, and he will be missed by his teammates.
Looking Ahead to Next Season
As the school year comes to an end, the U Of M Hockey team is already looking ahead to next season. The team has been working hard in the off-season and is excited to get back on the ice.
Next season, the team will be looking to build on their success from last year. They are returning a core group of players, including captain Dylan Larkin, who will be leading the team. The team is also excited to welcome some new players to the roster.
