The History of Wartburg Baseball

Wartburg Baseball has a long and storied tradition of excellence. Founded in 1884, the program has produced many Great players and teams over the years.

The early years of Wartburg Baseball were dominated by two players: pitcher Carlisle Gates and infielder Frank Pierce. Gates was a four-time All-American and is considered one of the best pitchers in program history. Pierce was also a four-time All-American and is considered one of the best hitters in program history. Together, they led the team to four conference championships and four national championships.

In the 1920s, Wartburg Baseball experienced a period of success under Head Coach John Scoodle. Scoodle led the team to six conference championships and three national championships. He also coached future Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Walter Johnson.

After Scoodle’s retirement, Wartburg Baseball went through a bit of a dry spell. The team didn’t have another winning season until 1950, when they hired head coach Don Caviness. Under Caviness, the team enjoyed steady success, winning six conference championships and three national championships.

Caviness retired in 1970, and his Assistant Coach George Keogan took over as Head Coach Keogan continued the tradition of excellence, winning eight conference championships and five national championships in his tenure. He retired in 2000 after leading the team to their most recent National Championship

Wartburg Baseball has been one of the most successful programs in college baseball history. With 14 conference championships and nine national championships, they are truly a tradition of excellence.

The Wartburg Baseball Program

Wartburg College has a long-standing tradition of excellence in baseball. The program has produced numerous All-Americans and Conference Players of the Year, and has been ranked among the top 25 teams in NCAA Division III baseball poll. The Wartburg Knights have also made six trips to the College World Series and have won two national championships.

The Wartburg Baseball Program has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. The first recorded game took place in 1903, and the first intercollegiate game was played against Central College in 1904. The program continued to grow throughout the early years, and experienced success on the diamond. In 1909, Wartburg won its first conference championship and would go on to win 11 more titles in the next 17 years.

During the 1930s, Wartburg experienced its most successful decade on the baseball field The team won four conference championships and made three trips to the College World Series In 1935, Wartburg won its first National Championship with a 5-1 victory over George Pepperdine in the title game. The team made another trip to the College World Series in 1936, but was unable to defend its title.

After a few down years during World War II, Wartburg baseball rebounded in the late 1940s and 1950s. The team won three more conference championships during this time period, and made two more trips to the College World Series In 1949, Wartburg finished as national runner-up after losing to Western Kentucky in the Championship game

The Wartburg baseball program continued to enjoy success throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. During this time period, the team won eight more conference championships and made five trips to the NCAA Division III tournament. In 1986, Warturg made its sixth trip to the College World Series and finished as national runner-up for the second time in school history after losing to Marietta College in Extra Innings of the Championship game

The 1990s were a down decade for Wartburg baseball, as the team failed to make any trips to postseason play. However, things began to turn around in 2000 as Head coach Steve Johnson led the team back to prominence. Since then, Warturg has won 10 conference championships and made four trips to NCAA Division III tournament. In 2009, Johnson led Warturg back to Omaha for the seventh time in school history after defeating favorite Kean University in extra innings of regional final game
