WCC Mens Basketball The Best of the West- The Future
The West Coast Conference is one of the most basketball-centric leagues in the country. And with good reason: the conference has produced some of the best teams in recent years including Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s, and BYU. But with all of the success that these teams have had, one could argue that the future of WCC basketball is even more promising. Here are three reasons why:
1) The conference is loaded with young talent.
Many of the best players in the conference are still early in their careers and have yet to reach their full potential. For example, Gonzaga’s Filip Petrusev was just named the WCC Player of the Year as a sophomore, and he’s only going to get better in the years to come. Similarly, Saint Mary’s freshman center Jordan Ford is already one of the best players in the league and he has four years of eligibility remaining. This young core of talent bodes well for the future of WCC basketball.
2) The conference has a deep bench of quality programs.
In addition to the aforementioned powerhouse programs, the WCC also boasts a number of other quality programs that are capable of making noise on a national level. For example, Pepperdine has been to two straight NCAA Tournaments, while Loyola Marymount has been one of the most improved teams in recent years. This depth gives the WCC a level of parity that is unmatched by most other conferences.
3) The conference is on an upward trend overall.
Not only are there individual programs on the rise within the conference, but the WCC as a whole is trending upwards. In fact, it could be argued that no mid-major conference has been on a more consistent upwards trajectory than the WCC over the past few years. With all things considered, it’s safe to say that exciting things are on horizon for WCC basketball.
WCC Mens Basketball The Best of the West- A Legacy of Excellence
The West Coast Conference has long been considered one of the best basketball conferences in the country. And for good reason- the conference has produced some of the best teams and players in college basketball history. From national powerhouses like UCLA and Gonzaga to smaller schools like Pepperdine and Santa Clara the WCC has always been a force to be reckoned with.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the conference’s recent success in the NCAA Tournament In the last 5 years alone, the WCC has sent 10 different teams to the Big Dance, including 6 in 2018. And while not every team has been able to make a deep run, there have been plenty of highlights along the way.
In 2016, Gonzaga made history by becoming the first team from a “mid-major” conference to make it all the way to the Final Four. The Bulldogs would eventually fall short of their ultimate goal, but their run was an inspiration for schools across the country.
Just one year later, another WCC team made noise in the tournament- this time it was Saint Mary’s. The Gaels put together a strong season that culminated in a Sweet 16 appearance, where they narrowly lost to eventual national runner-up Oregon.
And 2018 was yet another banner year for WCC hoops, as 6 different teams made it to March Madness Gonzaga once again led the way, reaching their second straight Final Four before losing in heartbreaking fashion to eventual champion Villanova. But it wasn’t just the Bulldogs who had success- Pepperdine also made noise with a first round upset of Texas Tech while BYU and Loyola Marymount also won their opening games.
So what does the future hold for WCC basketball? Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure- with so much talent and tradition, there is no doubt that the West Coast Conference is here to stay as one of college basketball’s premier conferences.
