Even though it’s cold outside, there’s no off-season for college baseball fans. Wofford’s baseball team is already hard at work preparing for next season, and they have their sights set on big things.

The Terriers had a breakout year in 2018, posting a school-record 41 wins and winning the Southern Conference regular season championship. They narrowly missed out on an NCAA Tournament berth, but they’re determined to make it to the big dance in 2019.

With a talented core of returning players and some key newcomers, Wofford is poised to make another run at the conference title Head Coach Todd Interdonato is confident in his team’s abilities and is excited to see what they can do over the course of the season.

Wofford’s Path to Success

Wofford baseball has been on the rise in recent years thanks in large part to the team’s strong pitching staff.

In 2016, the Terriers made their first appearance in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament and they haven’t looked back since. Wofford has won back-to-back Southern Conference championships and has made three straight trips to the NCAA tournament

The pitching staff has been a big reason for the team’s success. In 2018, Wofford had four pitchers who were selected in the MLB Draft including All-American closer Will Golsan. Golsan was a 12th-round pick of the Atlanta Braves

The team’s success has led to increased interest from fans and media alike. Wofford was featured in a lengthy article in The New York Times in 2019, and ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” broadcast live from Terrier Park during the 2019 season.

The Team’s Culture of Excellence

In recent years the Wofford College baseball team has forged a culture of excellence both on and off the field. The team has won back-to-back Southern Conference championships and made two consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. In 2019, they reached the NCAA tournament regional finals for the first time in program history.

Off the field, the team’s players are equally committed to success. They boast a 100% graduation rate, and in 2019 they were named the Academic Team of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

This culture of excellence is a direct result of the team’s strong leadership. head coach Todd Interdonato has instilled a passion for winning in his players, and that passion has translated into success on and off the field.

The Team’s Commitment to Development

Since joining the Southern Conference in 1997, the Ford baseball team has made nine trips to the conference tournament won three championships and made one appearance in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship Head Coach Steve Traylor, who is entering his 18th season at Wofford, has seen the program’s development firsthand.

“Our goal every year is to put ourselves in a position to win the conference tournament and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament ” Traylor said. “We’ve been fortunate enough to do that on a few occasions, but we’re always looking to take that next step and advance further in the postseason.”

Traylor credits the team’s success to its commitment to development, both on and off the field. In addition to their dedication to their craft, he says that the players are also committed to their academic success.

“We have a saying here that ‘Baseball is what we do, but it is not who we are,’” Traylor said. “Our players understand that they are student-athletes first and foremost, and they take pride in representing Wofford well in all aspects of their lives.”

This commitment has paid off for the team, both on and off the field. In 2019, six members of the team were named Academic All-Southern Conference and four were named to the conference’s All-Tournament Team. The team also earned recognition from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) for its academic success, receiving a Team Academic Excellence Award for posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2018-19 academic year.

With a strong commitment to development and success both on and off the field, it is clear that Ford Baseball is a team on the rise.

The Team’s Bright Future

With a new Head coach and a core group of young talent, the Wofford baseball team is poised for success in the coming years.

Since taking over as head coach in 2016, Mike McGuire has turned the program around, leading the Terriers to a winning record in each of the last two seasons. The team has also made back-to-back appearances in the Southern Conference Tournament something that has not been done in over a decade.

The future looks even brighter for Wofford baseball, as most of the team’s Key Players are still underclassmen. This includes ace pitcher Grace Gilchrist, who was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year after going 18-5 with a 1.90 ERA in 2019.

With Coach McGuire at the helm and a talented group of players, the Wofford Baseball Team is poised for continued success in the years to come.

Wofford’s path to success (part 2): In part one of this series, we examined how Wofford has become one of the top baseball programs in the country. In this article, we will take a closer look at the team’s recent success and how they have been able to maintain a high level of play.

Since 2011, Wofford has won four Southern Conference championships and made three NCAA tournament appearances. The team has also been ranked as high as No. 19 in the nation by Baseball America

Much of Wofford’s success can be attributed to the team’s hitting. The Terriers have led the Southern Conference in batting average in four of the last five seasons and have been among the top three teams in the league in Slugging percentage and on-base percentage during that span.

Wofford’s hitters have been especially good against left-handed pitching. In 2015, the team hit .337/.431/.520 against lefties, which was the best mark in Division I Baseball

The Terriers have also benefited from having a deep and experienced lineup. In 2015, eight different players hit 10 or more home runs and seven players had an on-base percentage of .400 or better.

One of the keys to Wofford’s success has been its ability to develop players. Many of the team’s best hitters have come through the program as unheralded prospects and gone on to have successful careers at the collegiate level.

Outfielder Bradley McDougald is one example. He was not drafted out of High School or junior college and only received a partial scholarship to attend Wofford. But he developed into one of the best hitters in program history, finishing his career with a .349 batting average 43 home runs and 172 RBIs.
