Worcester State Basketball is Back

This season, the Worcester State men’s basketball team is back and better than ever. The team is off to a great start, with a record of 8-2. The players are working hard and the support from the fans has been incredible.

The New Season is Here

It’s a new season for Worcester State basketball and the team is poised to make some noise. After a strong showing last year, the team is looking to make a statement this year and prove that they are one of the best teams in the country. With a talented group of players and a passionate coach, Worcester State is ready to take on all challengers.

The Schedule

The Worcester State men’s basketball team will open their season on Tuesday, November 5th, at home against Nichols College. The Lancers are coming off a successful 2018-2019 campaign in which they finished with a record of 18-9 and made it to the semi-finals of the Massachusetts State collegiate athletic conference (MASCAC) tournament.

This season, Worcester State will look to build on that success and make a run at the MASCAC championship. They will have their work cut out for them, as the conference is expected to be highly competitive once again. But with a strong returning core of players and some promising newcomers, the Lancers are confident that they can compete with anyone in the conference.

The Roster

The Worcester State men’s basketball team returns all five starters from last year’s squad that went 15-12 overall and 9-7 in the MASCAC, good for fourth place in the Conference Standings

The Coaches

The Worcester State men’s basketball team is coming off of a great season in which they went 22-7 and made it to the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen for the first time in program history. They are looking to build on that success this season with a core group of players that have another year of experience under their belts. Head Coach Matt Murrell is entering his fourth season at the helm of the program, and he is excited about the potential of his team.

“We feel like we have a chance to be even better than we were last year,” said Coach Murrell. “We have a lot of returning guys who have gotten better and worked hard in the offseason. We are adding some newcomers that we think can make an immediate impact. We are excited about the upcoming season and can’t wait to get started.”

One player who will be key to the team’s success is senior guard Michael Bennie. Bennie was named the MASCAC Player of the Year last season after averaging 17.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game He is also a two-time All-American and was recently named to the Preseason All-America team by D3hoops.com.

“It’s great to be recognized by your peers, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t mean anything if we don’t go out and win games,” said Bennie. “I am just focused on helping my team win and trying to get back to where we were last year. I think we have what it takes to make another run at things this season.”

The Worcester State women’s basketball team is also coming off of a successful season in which they went 20-8 and made it to the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 2010. They will be looking to build on that success this season with a talented group of returners led by head coach Tracy Williams-Johnson.

“We are really excited about this upcoming season ” said Coach Williams-Johnson. “We had a great year last year, but we feel like there is still more Room for Improvement We have worked hard in practice and we are ready to take things to the next level this season.”

One player who will be key to the team’s success is senior guard Alexyss Vazquez. Vazquez was named first team All-MASCAC last season after averaging 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game She is also Worcester State’s all-time leader in three pointers made (182) and is second in school history in career scoring (1,516).

Both teams will open up their seasons on November 10th with home games against Nichols College

Worcester State fans are passionate, enthusiastic, and supportive. The WSU community mobilizes behind its teams and rallies together to create an electric atmosphere, home or away. Last season, the Women’s Basketball team had strong home court advantage thanks to the support of the students, staff, and faculty. That same support is expected to continue this season as the Men’s Basketball Team looks to make a run at the conference title

The Game

Worcester State couldn’t ask for a better season. The mens Basketball team is undefeated and ranked number one in the conference. Their fans are some of the most dedicated in the country, and they have some of the best facilities in the league. The team is confident and poised to make a run at the championship.

The Results

The Worcester State men’s Basketball team is back and better than ever. After a disappointing season last year, the team has rebounded and is currently sitting atop the conference standings.

The team’s success can be attributed to a number of factors. First and foremost, the team has improved its shooting. Last year, the team was one of the worst shooting teams in the country. This year, they are one of the best. Additionally, the team has increased its offensive output and is now averaging over 70 points per game

Finally, the team’s defense has been much improved. The team is currently allowing just 60 points per game which is one of the best marks in the country.

Coach Matt McCall comes to Worcester State with a wealth of experience, having served as an Assistant Coach at UMass for the past four seasons. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and a passion for the game that is sure to rub off on his players.

The returning core of players includes captain Chris Herren Jr., who averaged 15 points per game last season, as well as fellow seniors Malik Hines and Jordan Lynch. With their leadership and experience, combined with Coach McCall’s guidance, the Worcester State men’s Basketball Team is poised for a successful season.
