The History of Zalgiris Kaunas
Zalgiris Kaunas is a Lithuanian professional basketball team that plays in the EuroLeague. They are one of the most successful teams in Europe having won 13 European-level titles, including the EuroLeague in 1999 and 2014. The team has also won 26 Lithuanian League championships, 17 Lithuanian Cups, and 3 Baltic Championships.
Founded in 1947, the club was originally known as LS Alchemistės (Lithuanian Sport Union Alchemistė). In 1949, the club was renamed to Zalgiris after its sponsor, the Lithuanian social-democratic party. The team’s home court has always been located in Kaunas Sports Hall.
The club’s first coach was Steponas Bendzius. Under his leadership, Zalgiris won seven Lithuanian championships and four Lithuanian Cups. In 1963–1964, Zalgiris made history by becoming the first Soviet team to make it to the Top 8 of the European Champions Cup (now known as the EuroLeague).
Rimantas Endrijaitis took over as coach of Zalgiris in 1970 and led the team to their first Soviet Union championship in 1985–1986. He also guided them to two more USSR championships (in 1987–1988 and 1988–1989) as well as a Soviet Cup victory in 1989–1990.
After independence from the Soviet Union was achieved in 1991, Arvydas Sabonis return home from Spain to play for Zalgiris. Under his leadership, Zalgiris won back-to-back Lithuania Basketball league titles in 1992–1993 and 1993–1994. In 1995–1996, they made it all the way to the FIBA Saporta Cup final Four before losing to eventual champions Olympiacos Piraeus.
Zeljko Obradovic became Head Coach of Zalgiris in 1997 and led them to their first EuroLeague title in 1999 – defeating Olympiacos Piraeus 77:69 in Barcelona.
