The Departures from the Belmont Basketball Roster

In the offseason, every college Basketball team experiences some level of turnover. Players graduate, transfer to other schools, or declare for the NBA draft The Belmont Bruins are no different – they have had several players leave the program since last season. Here is a look at who is no longer with the team.

Roster Breakdown: The Guards

The Guards are the lifeblood of any basketball team They are responsible for bringing the ball up the court and setting the tone on both ends of the floor. A good Guard can change the entire complexion of a game.

The Belmont Bruins have always been known for their Guard play. This year is no different, as they return one of the best backcourts in all of college basketball

Leading the way is Senior All-American Dylan Windler. He is a 6’7″ wing who does a little bit of everything on the court. He averaged 21.3 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game last season. He is a walking double-double who can also shoot the lights out from beyond the arc. Windler is one of the best players in college basketball and will be looked upon to lead this team to a conference championship

Joining Windler in the backcourt is Senior shooting guard Kevin McClain. McClain is a transfer from Jacksonville State who sat out last season due to NCAA rules. McClain is a sharpshooter who averaged 19 points per game during his junior year at Jacksonville State He gives Belmont another scoring threat on the wing and will likely start alongside Windler in the backcourt.

Rounding out the group is Sophomore point guard Darius Garland. Garland missed most of last season with a Knee Injury but he showed glimpses of his potential before going down. Garland is an elite level talent and has NBA scouts drooling over his potential at the next level. When healthy, Garland gives Belmont another ball-handler and playmaker on the court who can create his own shot or set up his teammates with ease

Roster Breakdown: The Forwards

Forwards are often the tallest players on a Basketball team and are responsible for scoring points and rebounding missed shots. In the Belmont Bruins Basketball Program there are currently four forwards on the roster. Here is a breakdown of each player.

Angelo Warner is a 6’7” freshman from Montgomery, Alabama. He redshirted last season and will have four years of eligibility remaining.

Warner is joined by fellow freshman Kevin McClain, a 6’6” forward from Jacksonville, Florida. McClain was rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports and chose Belmont over offers from Florida Gulf Coast Loyola Chicago and UCF. He will also have four years of eligibility remaining.

Sophomore Dylan Windler is a 6’7” forward from Indianapolis, Indiana. He averaged 11.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as a freshman and was named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman team. Windler has three years of eligibility remaining.

Senior Amanze Egekeze is a 6’8” forward from Laguna Niguel, California. He averaged 13.5 points per game last season and is Belmont’s leading returning scorer. Egekeze has one year of eligibility remaining.

Roster Breakdown: The Centers

Now that we’re a few weeks into the off-season, it’s a good time to start taking a look at Belmont’s roster for next season and break it down by position. We’ll start with the centers.

As of right now, the Bruins have three centers on their roster: redshirt senior Nick Smith, junior Dylan Windler, and sophomore Kevin McClain. Smith is the only one of the three who played significant minutes last season, averaging just over 23 minutes per game while Windler and McClain saw limited action.

Smith is a solid veteran presence in the middle and will likely be the starter again next season. He’s not overly tall at 6’10”, but he’s a good shot-blocker and rebounder. His biggest weakness is his lack of offensive production; he averaged just 3.8 points per game last season.

Windler is an intriguing prospect. He redshirted last season after transferring from Vincennes University so he’ll be eligible to play immediately next year. He’s 6’7″ with good athleticism and shooting ability. He needs to add some strength and bulk before he’ll be able to really contribute at the Division I level, but he has potential to be a solid player down the road.

McClain is another transfer; he came to Belmont last year from Florida State College of Jacksonville. He saw very limited action last season, appearing in just four games. He’s got good size at 6’11” and has shown some ability as a shot-blocker in his limited minutes. Like Windler, he needs to add some strength before he can really be effective at this level but has some potential down the road.
