Get to know Mike Krzyzewski Head Coach
Get to know Mike Krzyzewski the Head Coach of the Duke basketball team He has been the head coach since 1980 and has led the team to five NCAA Championships He is also a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame
Get to know Jeff Capel- Associate Head Coach
Jeff Capel is in his second season as Associate Head Coach of the Duke Men’s Basketball Program He assists head coach Mike Krzyzewski in all aspects of the program including on-court coaching, recruiting, and player development
Capel has helped lead Duke to a 41-6 record over the past two seasons, including a 27-5 mark in 2019-20. The Blue Devils have won 20+ games in each of the last eight seasons and have advanced to the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 or beyond in each of those years.
Prior to joining Duke’s staff, Capel served as Head coach at Pittsburgh for four seasons (2015-19). He led the Panthers to a 58-41 record during his tenure, including an appearance in the 2019 NCAA Tournament
Capel began his coaching career as an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2002-06 before moving on to Oklahoma for three seasons (2006-09). He then spent one year (2009-10) as an assistant at Duke before being named head coach at Appalachian State University
Get to know Jon Scheyer Assistant Coach
Jon Scheyer enters his first season as an Assistant Coach for the Duke men’s Basketball team in 2020-21.
A native of Northbrook, Ill., Scheyer played four seasons for the Blue Devils from 2006-10, helping lead Duke to a pair of NCAA National Championships (2010, ‘15). He capped off his storied career by becoming the program’s first two-time National Player of the Year, winning the Bob Cousy Award and Oscar Robertson Trophy in 2010.
Get to know Nate James- Assistant Coach
Nathaniel “Nate” James is an assistant coach for the Duke University Men’s basketball team
He was born in Durham, North Carolina and played High School basketball at Southern high school James then went on to play college basketball at Duke University from 1998-2002. After graduation, he played Professional Basketball in Europe and Asia for several years.
In 2013, James returned to his alma mater to become an assistant coach under Mike Krzyzewski He has been with the team ever since, helping them win a National Championship in 2015.
Coach James is known for his strong work ethic and ability to connect with players. He is a great asset to the Duke Basketball program and will continue to be for years to come.
Get to know Chris Carrawell- Assistant Coach
Chris Carrawell is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Duke men’s Basketball Program Prior to arriving in Durham, he spent the last two seasons working as a college basketball analyst for ESPN.
A former All-ACC performer and co-captain at Duke, Carrawell rejoined the Blue Devils’ Coaching Staff after serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater from 2011-13. He helped lead MU to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 berth in 2013.
Carrawell, who also played professionally overseas for several years, returned to Duke in 2010 as the program’s Director of Student-Athlete Development. In that role, he worked closely with the team’s academic support staff and assisted with on-campus recruiting efforts.
A native of Chicago, Ill., Carrawell graduated from Duke in 2000 with a degree in African & African American Studies. He and his wife, Africa, have three daughters: Brooklynn (11), Skylar (9) and Callie (6).
Get to know Tony Bland- Assistant Coach
Tony Bland enters his fourth season at Duke in 2020-21, his first as assistant head coach
Bland came to Duke after two seasons (2014-16) as an assistant coach at Southern California He helped the Trojans to a 28-9 overall record and a share of the Pac-12 regular season championship in 2015-16. He also served as the program’s recruiting coordinator during his time at USC.
Prior to USC, Bland was an assistant coach at San Diego State for four seasons (2010-14). He helped the Aztecs to four consecutive Mountain West Conference regular season titles and four NCAA tournament appearances, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2011.
Bland began his coaching career as an assistant at Syracuse from 2008-10, where he helped the Orange to back-to-back NCAA tournament berths. Bland played collegiately at San Diego State from 2002-06.
Get to know Duke Basketball’s Support Staff
When it comes to support staff, Duke has one of the most impressive in the country. From a former head coach and Olympian to an up-and-coming young mind, the Blue Devils have a well-rounded staff to help their student-athletes on and off the court.
Leading the staff is head Coach Mike Krzyzewski Coach K, as he’s affectionately known, is college basketball’s all-time winningest coach with 1,170 victories. He’s led Duke to five national championships, 12 Final Four appearances and 17 ACC Regular Season titles.
Assistant coaches Nolan Smith and Jon Scheyer are two of Coach K’s former players who have returned to Durham to help mentor the next generation of Blue Devils Smith was a member of Duke’s 2010 National Championship team while Scheyer helped lead Duke to the 2009 national title.
Jeff Capel III rounds out the coaching staff as Associate head coach Capel has been with Duke since 2011 and has helped Coach K and the Blue Devils to four ACC regular season titles and two ACC tournament championships.

The Coaching Staff plays a vital role in the success of the program. They are responsible for recruiting the best players from around the country, teaching them the fundamentals of the game, and preparing them for the rigors of competition.

Mike Krzyzewski – Head Coach
Coach K is one of the most accomplished coaches in College Basketball history. He has led Duke to five national championships, eleven Final Fours, and thirteen ACC Tournament titles. He was also recently inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
Jon Scheyer – Associate Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator
Coach Scheyer is in his fourth season on Coach K’s staff at Duke. He oversees player development and works closely with the team’s recruiting efforts. Prior to joining Duke’s staff, he was an assistant coach at Ohio State University
Nolan Smith – Assistant Coach/Player Development
Coach Smith is in his fifth season on Coach K’s staff at Duke. He works with player development and also serves as the team’s academic coordinator. Prior to joining Duke’s staff, he was an assistant coach at University of Kentucky

Duke Basketball is set to begin its 2021 campaign with a new-look Coaching Staff Here’s a closer look at the team’s marketing and promotions staff.
Head coach David Cutcliffe enters his 13th season at the helm of the Duke program. He is joined by co-defensive coordinator Jon Cooper, who also serves as the team’s linebackers coach.
Defensive backs coach Derek Jones and special teams coordinator Joe Lorigo round out the defensive staff.
On the offensive side of the ball, Matt Lubick was elevated to offensive coordinator and shall call plays for the Blue Devils In addition to his offensive duties, Lubick will also serve as Duke’s wide receivers coach. Ryan Day returns as Duke’s quarterbacks coach while also serving as the passing game coordinator.
Rounding out the offensive coaching staff are running backs coach Lemar Dunbar and tight ends/fullbacks coach Brad Hostetter.

The Duke basketball game operations staff is a group of hard-working individuals who make sure that everything runs smoothly on game day From setting up the court to making sure the players have everything they need, these are the people who make Duke basketball games possible. Get to know them a little better with this quick guide.
The head of game operations is Mike Cragg, who has been with the program for over 20 years. He is responsible for making sure that everything is set up and ready to go on game day and he also serves as the head coach’s right-hand man.
Tommy Amaker is the associate head coach and is in charge of player development. He has been with Duke since 1999 and is one of the most respected coaches in the country.
Jeff Capel is the assistant coach and is responsible for recruiting. He joined Duke in 2007 and has helped land some of the best players in the country.
Jon Scheyer is the special assistant to Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski. He joined Duke in 2013 after a successful playing career at Stanford University
