Former Aggies in the NBA
NMSU had two NBA draft picks in 2018, making it a total of five in the last three years. Along with these five Aggies, there are several other former Aggies who are currently playing in the NBA. Here is a list of the former NMSU basketball players who are in the NBA:
Trey Burger: Signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2014
Pascal Siakam: Toronto Raptors forward, 2016 NBA Champion 2019 NBA Finals MVP

Aggies in the WNBA
The New Mexico State University Aggies women’s basketball team is currently in the Western Athletic Conference In recent years the team has seen success in the conference, making it to the conference tournament semifinals in both 2016 and 2017. The team’s most recent conference tournament appearance was in 2018, when they lost in the first round. The Aggies have not made it to the NCAA tournament since 2000.
The team is currently coached by Brooke Atkinson, who is in her first season with the Aggies. Atkinson took over for former Head Coach Mark Trakh, who left NMSU to take an assistant coaching position with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. Under Atkinson’s leadership, the team has a record of 16-13 as of February 28th, 2019.
Former Aggies in the WNBA
The New Mexico State University women’s basketball team has had several players drafted by the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) since the league’s inception in 1997. As of 2019, 11 former Aggies have been drafted into the WNBA.
The first Aggie to be drafted into the league was Tamera Williams, who was selected in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Rockers. Williams played three seasons in the WNBA, averaging 5.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game
Kelsey McCowan was drafted in 2010 by the Minnesota Lynx, becoming just the second Aggie ever to be selected in the first round of the draft. McCowan appeared in one game for the Lynx before being waived.
Dannyishia Wright was drafted by the Connecticut Sun in 2014 and appeared in 12 games during her rookie season, averaging 1.3 points per game She was waived by the Sun after one season and did not play in the WNBA again.
Following Wright, Three Aggies were drafted in 2015:
Peyton Borckardt by the Indiana Fever with the 17th pick in the third round (71st overall), 22nd pick Jayla Brown by Los Angeles Sparks (78th overall) and eighth pick Brianna Freeman-Carterby Seattle Storm (96th overall). Freeman-Carter is currently playing for Dynamo Kursk Region of Russia and Brown is playing for Universitario de Sucre of Bolivia while Borckardt last played Professional Basketball for Gipuzkoa Basket Club of Spain.
In 2016, Keyora Wharry was drafted 28th overall (fourth round) by Phoenix Mercury but did not play a game for them as she was waived beforethe season began. 2017 saw two Aggies get drafted as Tearra Banks went 10th overall (second round) to Washington Mystics while Sidra Laws went 14th overall (third round) to Connecticut Sun but both Banks and Laws were also waived before appearingin a regular season game for their respective teams
Aggies in International Basketball
The New Mexico State Aggies men’s basketball team is representing the United States in the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup. The event is being held in Argentina from August 27 to September 3.
