Jay Johnson is a name you should know. He’s one of the winningest Baseball Coaches in NCAA Division I history, and he just so happens to be the Head Coach of my Alma Mater, the University of San Francisco Dons

In his 11 seasons at USF, Coach Johnson has compiled a 415- 290 (.589) record, leading the Dons to 7 NCAA regional appearances, 3 WCC regular season championships and 1 WCC Tournament Championship Under his guidance, the Dons have reached new heights, becoming a perennial powerhouse in West Coast Conference Baseball

A native of Turlock, CA, Coach Johnson was a 3-sport athlete in High School (baseball, basketball and football) re Playing college baseball at UC Santa Barbara He began his coaching career as an assistant at UC Santa Barbara before taking over as head coach at Menlo College in 1995. In his one season at Menlo, he led the Oaks to a 30-15 (.667) record and was named NAIA West Coach of the Year.

From there, Coach Johnson took his talents to Indiana State University where he coached for 5 seasons (1996-2000). In 1998, he led the Sycamores to a school-record 41 wins and their first NCAA Regional appearance in 18 years. He was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year that season.

In 2001, Coach Johnson returned to California to take over as Head Coach at USF. In his first season at USF, he led the Dons to a 37-22 (.627) record and their first NCAA Regional appearance since 1991. He has continued to lead the Dons to new heights in his 11 seasons at USF, solidifying their place as one of the top programs on the West Coast

Coach Johnson is not only one of the winningest coaches in USF history; he’s also one of the winningest coaches in NCAA Division I history. His .589 career winning percentage ranks him 21st among active Division I coaches (min. 10 years). In addition, his 415 career wins rank him 34th among active Division I coaches (min. 10 years).

Jay Johnson was born in San Diego California, in 1947. He played minor League Baseball for six years before he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 1970. Johnson played for the Red Sox for two years before he was traded to the Chicago Cubs He played for the Cubs for four years before he retired from playing in 1976.

Johnson became a coach after he retired from playing. He coached minor league baseball for eleven years before he became the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers in 1998. Johnson coached the Brewers for two years before he was fired. He then became a coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2000. Johnson was the Diamondbacks’ bench coach for two years before he became their third base coach in 2002. He was the Diamondbacks’ third base coach until he was fired in 2006.

Johnson became the manager of the Seattle Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate, the Tacoma Rainiers, in 2007. He managed the Rainiers for one year before he was hired by Major League Baseball to be a roving minor league instructor. Johnson held that position until 2012 when he became the infield and bunting instructor for the Mariners. He held that position until 2014 when he joined Charlie Manuel’s Coaching Staff with the Philadelphia Phillies
