The Rules of Basketball

Basketball is a sport that is played by two teams of five players on a rectangular court. The objective of the game is to shoot a ball through a hoop mounted high on a backboard at each end of the court. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Basketball is played on either an indoor or outdoor court, depending on the level of play. The court is divided into two halves by a mid-court line, with a basket at each end. The game begins with a jump ball at the center circle between two opponents.

Players can move the ball up and down the court by dribbling or passing it to their teammates. Once a player has taken more than two steps without dribbling, he or she must stop and can then only take two more steps before having to stop and pass or shoot. A player who tries to dribble and then takes more than two steps without dribbling commits a traveling violation and must turn the ball over to their opponent.

A player can score points by shooting the ball through the basket from anywhere on the court. A player can also earn points by shooting free throws which are awarded after an opponent commits certain types of fouls or violations.
