Aquinas Basketball: The Early Years

Basketball was originally played with a Soccer Ball and basket. Dr. James Naismith a physical education professor at Springfield College in Massachusetts, developed the game in 1891 as an indoor activity to keep his students occupied during the winter months. Naismith’s game quickly caught on, and within a few years, it had spread to colleges and universities across the country.

The first college basketball game was played between two all-male teams from Yale University and Pennsylvania College (now Penn State University) on February 9, 1895. The contest was won by Yale, 32-10.

Aquinas College fielded its first men’s basketball team in the early 1900s. The program quickly gained popularity, and by 1913, the team had compiled an impressive 23-3 record. Aquinas continued to enjoy success on the court throughout the 1920s, compiling a 117-36 record over the decade.

The 1930s were somewhat of a down period for Aquinas Basketball The team struggled to find success, finishing with a losing record in six of the decade’s ten seasons. However, the program rebounded in the 1940s, thanks in part to the recruiting efforts of Head Coach Hugh “Bing” Devine. Devine guided Aquinas to a 96-69 record over his seven seasons at the helm of the program.

The 1950s were once again a down period for Aquinas basketball. The team struggled through most of the decade, finishing below .500 in eight of ten seasons. However, things began to turn around in 1959 when rookie head coach John Wooden led Aquinas to a 20-9 record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament

Aquinas Basketball: The Championship Years

Aquinas College Basketball has a long and storied history, but perhaps its most successful period came in the late 1990s and early 2000s. With a recruiting class that featured future NBA players Mike Conley Jr. and Dajuan Wagner, Aquinas dominated the college basketball landscape, winning back-to-back National Championships in 2000 and 2001.

Conley and Wagner were two of the most electric players in college basketball during their time at Aquinas, and they helped lead the team to an impressive 111-16 record over their three years on campus. The pair was so talented that they were both selected in the first round of the 2002 NBA draft with Conley going #4 overall to the Memphis Grizzlies and Wagner going #6 overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers

While Aquinas has not been able to replicate that level of success since Conley and Wagner left campus, the program remains one of the top collegiate basketball programs in the country. The team has made 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
