One of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the franchise was established as a Major League Baseball club in 1894. The club was originally known as the Chicago White Stockings (with “stockings” referring to the white socks worn by the team’s players), and featured players such as an infielder/manager Cap Anson, and outfielder/first baseman Abner Dalrymple. As a result of the Great Chicago Fire, which burned much of downtown Chicago on October 8–10, 1871, the White Stockings relocated to DePaul University and played their home games at Dexter Park until they relocated to South Side Park in 1900, where they played through 1910 when Comiskey Park (originally proposed as South Side Park II) opened. In 1910, Comiskey bought out Spalding for $500,000 and assumed nearly total control of the franchise (which would most likely have resulted in Spalding seeking another location for his team). In 1912 and 1913, respectively, each league completed its schedule with one fewer teams than had competed in 1901 because two new franchises—the New York Highlanders (later renamed as just Yankees) of AL and Boston Braves (later renamed Braves) of NL—had entered each league during those seasons (1901 was also first season that expand schedule play from 157 to 162 games). Nonetheless it remained an exclusive two-team league until 1954 when Milwaukee Brewers were added as part of Major League Baseball’s expansion effort that eventually led to both leagues playing with 10 teams by
