The first recorded Game of Baseball in North Carolina took place in 1859, between two college teams. The sport quickly gained popularity, and by the late 1800s, there were dozens of amateur and semi-professional teams across the state.

Sadly, the professional teams that did exist were often short-lived due to financial difficulties. It wasn’t until the late 1940s that a North Carolina team finally achieved lasting success when the Raleigh Capitals became a founding member of the Tri-State League.

Since then, minor league baseball has thrived in North Carolina with teams in nearly every city and region of the state. And while there have been several unsuccessful attempts to bring Major League Baseball to North Carolina (most notably the proposed Charlotte Senators), there is still hope that one day, NC will be home to a Major League team.

With such a rich baseball history it’s no surprise that North Carolina has produced some of the game’s biggest stars. From Hall of Famers like Willie Mays to modern-day superstars like Mike Trout these are some of the most famous North Carolina baseball players of all time.

Willie Mays: One of the greatest players in baseball history Mays was born in Westfield, NC in 1931. He played 22 seasons in the majors, winning two World Series titles with the New York Giants and being named National League MVP twice. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.

Mike Trout: Born in Vineland, NJ in 1991, Trout is widely considered to be one of the best players in baseball today. He’s a two-time American League MVP and a five-time All-Star, and he helped lead the Los Angeles Angels to a World Series appearance in 2014.

David Price: A native of Murfreesboro, NC, Price was drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2007. He’s a three-time All-Star and he won the AL Cy Young Award in 2012. He’s currently a member of the Boston Red Sox rotation.

Jose Bautista: Born in Santo Domingo, Bautista moved to NC when he was 12 years old and attended high school in Raleigh. He played 20 seasons in MLB, making six All-Star teams and winning two Silver Slugger Awards. He retired following the 2018 season.
