CCBC Dundalk has a long and storied history in the world of basketball. The school has produced many great players over the years, and has been a powerhouse in the sport since its inception.
CCBC Dundalk was founded in 1957, and basketball soon became one of the school’s most popular sports The team won its first conference championship in 1960, and has since won 20 more titles. In total, CCBC Dundalk has won 30 conference championships and made 12 appearances in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament
The team has produced many great players over the years, including two-time NJCAA All-American Mike Whitehead. Whitehead is CCBC Dundalk’s All-time leading scorer with 2,471 points, and he currently ranks fourth in NJCAA Division III history. He was inducted into the CCBC Dundalk Hall of Fame in 2006.
Other notable CCBC Dundalk Basketball Alumni include Windell Diggs (1,818 career points), Derek Stanford (1,803 career points), and Johnnie Bates (1,726 career points).
The Early Days
The CCBC Dundalk Men’s basketball team has a long and storied history, dating back to the early days of the college. The team was founded in 1966, and has been a fixture of the CCBC Dundalk campus ever since. The team has seen its share of success over the years, winning several conference championships and making several appearances in the National junior college Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III tournament. Even though the team has experienced some recent setbacks, they continue to be a force to be reckoned with on the court, and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
The 1980s
The Dundalk Community College men’s Basketball team had their most successful decade in the 1980s. They made the NJCAA Division II tournament four times (1982, 1983, 1985, 1986), and advanced to the Elite Eight in 1985. The 1982-83 team set a school record for wins in a season with 27. Many of the players from those teams would go on to have successful careers at four-year colleges.
The 1990s
The CCBC Dundalk Lions men’s basketball team is a Junior College Basketball team that plays in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The team is based in Dundalk, Maryland, United States and represents the Community College of Baltimore County. The Lions compete in Region XX of the NJCAA Division III
Dundalk Community College fielded its first men’s basketball team during the 1969-70 season. The team played as a club sport until it became a varsity sport in 1974-75. The Lions began play as a member of the NJCAA Division II level in 1981-82. They would spend 10 seasons at that level before moving up to Division I in 1991-92.
The 1990s were a decade of success for Dundalk Basketball. The Lions made nine trips to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament including seven consecutive appearances from 1995-96 through 2001-02. They also won four Region XX Championships and six District VII Championships during the decade.
The New Millennium
The new millennium brought renewed success to the CCBC Dundalk Basketball Program In 2000-2001, the team posted a 29-5 overall record, won the conference title and made it to the NJCAA Division II national tournament. The team had another successful season in 2001-2002, posting a 27-5 overall record and winning another conference title After losing in the first round of the national tournament, CCBC Dundalk rebounded with a 28-6 overall record and another Conference Championship in 2002-2003. The team made it back to the national tournament that year, but lost in the first round.
The 2010s
The 2010s saw the men’s basketball team at CCBC Dundalk earn nationals recognition. In 2010, the team finished with a 27-4 record. This was followed by a 27-3 record in 2011 and a 25-5 record in 2012. The team won the NJCAA Division III National Championship in 2013 with a 29-3 record. They also won the National Championship in 2014, finishing with a 30-2 record.
The Present Day
The present day Dundalk Community College men’s basketball team is led by first-year Head Coach Matt Wilt. Coach Wilt, a Dundalk native, graduated from CCBC in 2006 with an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts. He went on to play four years of Division III basketball at Albright College in Pennsylvania, where he was a two-time All-Conference performer. After college, Coach Wilt returned to his roots and began his coaching career as an Assistant Coach at CCBC Dundalk under then head coach Mike Smelkinson. When Coach Smelkinson retired in 2019, Coach Wilt was promoted to Head Coach
In his first year at the helm, Coach Wilt has guided the Owls to a 21-7 overall record and a 16-4 mark in Maryland JUCO conference play The 21 wins are the most by a first-year Head coach in program history and the 16 conference wins are tied for the second most in program history. The Owls finished the regular season as co-champions of the Maryland JUCO conference and are currently ranked #5 in the NJCAA Region XX DII poll. They will open up Regional nt play on Saturday, March 7th against Wake Tech CC.
The Future of CCBC Dundalk Basketball
CCBC Dundalk Basketball is a team on the rise. After a subpar start to their season, the Lions have turned things around and are now one of the top community college basketball teams in the nation. With a strong core of young players and a talented Coaching Staff CCBC Dundalk is poised for success in the years to come.
The team has already made its mark on the national stage, winning the NJCAA Division III National Championship in 2015. This year, they look to build on that success with another deep run in the tournament. With a mix of experience and youth, CCBC Dundalk is a team to watch in the coming years.
