Auriemma was born in Italy but moved to the United States as a young child. He grew up in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and played basketball at Bishop Kenrick High School He then went on to play college basketball at the University of Virginia where he was a member of the Cavaliers’ 1976-77 team that reached the Final Four.
After college, Auriemma began his coaching career as an Assistant Coach at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He then became head coach of Temple University’s women’s team for one season before moving on to become an assistant coach with the United States women’s national team In 1985, he became Head Coach of Connecticut, where he has since led the Huskies to 11 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament championships and eight perfect seasons.
