How the Schedule Sets Up for Duke
After winning the National Championship in 2018, the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team will look to defend their title in the 2019 season. The debut of Zion Williamson one of the most highly anticipated recruits in college basketball history, will add even more excitement to what is already one of the most popular programs in the country.
The 2019 schedule was released today and it includes some marquee matchups that will have College Basketball fans drooling. Here’s a look at some of the key games on Duke’s schedule:
-Duke vs. Kentucky (November 5th): This matchup features two of the Blue Blood programs in College Basketball Duke and Kentucky have played each other nearly 40 times, with Kentucky holding a slight advantage in the series. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2017, when Duke won a close matchup 69-61.
-Duke vs. Gonzaga (November 21st): This game will pit two of the best coaches in college basketball against each other, as Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski takes on Mark Few of Gonzaga. These teams last played each other in 2015, when Duke won a thriller 74-73. This game will also be a homecoming for Rui Hachimura, who played High School basketball in Arlington, Virginia before attending Gonzaga.
-Duke vs. Syracuse (February 23rd): This is always one of the most anticipated games on Duke’s schedule, as Syracuse is one of Duke’s biggest rivals. The two teams have played each other over 150 times, with Duke holding a slim advantage in the series. Syracuse has had Duke’s number recently though, winning seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams.
Potential Roadblocks for Duke
Now that the college Basketball season is upon us, all eyes turn to Durham to see if Duke can repeat as National Champions There are many reasons to believe that Duke will be in the mix come tournament time, but there are also some potential roadblocks that could trip up the Blue Devils Let’s take a look at a few of them.
One potential issue for Duke is that they do not have a true point guard on their roster. This was not an issue last year, as they were able to rely on Trevon Duval to run the show. However, Duval is now in the NBA, and there is no clear-cut replacement for him on this year’s team. This could lead to some turnover problems and disrupted offensive flow for Duke.
Another potential issue is that Duke does not have a lot of experience at the center position. Marques Bolden is the only true center on the roster, and he has only averaged about 15 minutes per game over his career. This lack of depth could be exposed if Bolden gets into foul trouble or if teams are able to take advantage of Duke’s lack of size inside.
Finally, Duke will have a target on their back all season long as the defending National Champions. Every team will be gunning for them, and it will be tough for Duke to sneak up on anyone this year. They will also have to deal with increased media scrutiny and expectations from fans and pundits alike.
All in all, Duke still has a very talented team and should be in contention for another National Championship this year. However, they will need to overcome some challenges if they want to hoist the trophy once again.
