Introduction

With a history that dates back to 1893, Hampden-Sydney college baseball has long been considered one of the top programs in the nation. Located in central Virginia, Hampden-Sydney has produced many Major League Baseball players, including Hall of Famer Wade Boggs The team has also won several conference championships and made several appearances in the NCAA Division III World Series

The History of Hampden-Sydney Baseball

Hampden-Sydney Baseball has a long and storied history dating back to the early days of the College. The program has produced many successful teams and players over the years, and is currently one of the most respected programs in all of Division III baseball Below is a brief timeline of the some of the most important moments in Hampden-Sydney baseball history

1890 – The first Hampden-Sydney baseball team is formed.

1891 – The team goes undefeated in their inaugural season.

1892 – Hampden-Sydney becomes a charter member of the Virginia Collegiate Athletic Association which would later become the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

1903 – The team moves to their current home at Tyree Field.

1915 – Hampden-Sydney wins their first ODAC championship.

1924 – legendary Head Coach Clarence “BigTrain” Mitchell takes over the program. Mitchell would go on to lead the team for 27 seasons, winning 8 ODAC championships and finishing with a career record of 378-183-4.

1951 – Hampden-Sydney becomes a charter member of the Dixie Conference. The Conference would later merge with the Mason-Dixon Conference to form the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).
andy Macfarlane, one of Hampden-Sydney’s best players ever, finishes his collegiate career as Hampden-Sydney’s all-time leader in hits (169), RBIs (122), and home runs (24). He also set single season records for hits (57) and RBIs (52) in 1951. Following his graduation, Macfarlane would go on to have a successful career in Major League Baseball playing for 10 seasons with clubs such as the Pittsburgh Pirates Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians

1986 – Hampden-Sydney leaves the SAC to become an independent school again.. Andy Macfarlane’s son Doug becomes head coach During his tenure as Head Coach Coach Macfarlane would lead the Tigers to 4 conference championships and 2 NCAA tournament appearances. He would also be named conference Coach of the Year 3 times before stepping down in 2001 .

The Hampden-Sydney Baseball Team has a long and proud tradition of excellence. The team has won numerous conference championships and has been nationally ranked on several occasions. The team’s success is due in large part to the outstanding Coaching Staff and the commitment of the players to working hard and playing as a team. The tradition of excellence continues today, as the team seeks to add more conference championships and national rankings to its already impressive record.

The Hampden-Sydney Baseball Program

The Hampden-Sydney baseball program has a long and storied tradition of success, dating back to the team’s first season in 1893. The Tigers have won a total of 12 conference championships, made 17 appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament, and reached the College World Series twice. In addition, Hampden-Sydney has produced 37 Major League baseball players including Hall of Famer Russ Ford.

The Hampden-Sydney baseball team has a rich tradition of excellence, winning numerous conference championships and producing many professional players. The team plays its home games at historic Richardson Stadium, which has been the home of Hampden-Sydney baseball since 1955.

The Tigers have been one of the most successful teams in Division III baseball winning five conference championships and making nine trips to the NCAA Division III tournament. The team has also produced numerous professional players, including Major League Baseball All-Stars Chris Davis and Justin Verlander.

The Hampden-Sydney Baseball Conference

The Hampden-Sydney baseball conference is a Collegiate Baseball conference composed of eleven schools in the southeastern United States The conference was founded in 1975, and Hampden-Sydney College has been a member since its inception. The conference is dedicated to the promotion of baseball at the highest levels of competition and sportsmanship.

The conference sponsors two regular season events, the Hampden-Sydney Baseball Invitational and the conference tournament The conference tournament is held at the end of the regular season and determines the conference champion. The champion then advances to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship

The Hampden-Sydney Baseball Conference is committed to providing its student-athletes with an opportunity to compete at the highest levels of Collegiate Baseball competition, while also promoting sportsmanship, character development, and leadership.

The Hampden-Sydney Baseball Rivalries

The Hampden-Sydney baseball team has a long tradition of excellence, winning numerous conference championships and producing many Major League baseball players The team is also well-known for its fierce rivalries with other college teams, particularly the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and the University of Richmond (UR).

The VMI rivalry is the oldest and most intense of the three, dating back to 1885. The two teams have played each other nearly 200 times, making it one of the oldest rivalries in college baseball The UR rivalry is also longstanding, dating back to 1898. The two teams have met over 150 times on the diamond.

The Hampden-Sydney Baseball Alumni

The Hampden-Sydney baseball alumni is a group of former players, coaches, and supporters of Hampden-Sydney college baseball The group was formed in the fall of 2000 and continues to be very active in promoting Hampden-Sydney College Baseball The Alumni group sponsors an annual golf tournament each spring and provides financial support to the baseball program through the Hampden-Sydney College Foundation.

The Future of Hampden-Sydney Baseball

Hampden-Sydney baseball has a long and successful tradition. The team has been to the NCAA Division III World Series four times, winning it all in 2001.

The team is currently ranked #3 in the nation and is looking to return to the World Series again this year. With a strong group of returning players and some talented newcomers, the future looks bright for Hampden-Sydney baseball.
