Jmu Basketball Key Players to KnowThis season, the JMU basketball team will have a lot of new faces on the court. Here are a few key players that you should get to know:
#1. Redshirt sophomore guard Matt Lewis
A Baltimore native, Matt Lewis was a key contributor off the bench last season for the Dukes. This year, he will be looked to provide a scoring punch as a starter.
#2. Senior forward Dwight Wilson III
Entering his final season with the Dukes, Wilson is one of the team’s leaders and most experienced players. He is a versatile forward who can score inside and out.
#3. Freshman guard Jordan Ratliffe
Ratliffe is one of the top freshman guards in the country and he is expected to make an immediate impact for JMU this season. He is an electric scorer and has the ability to take over games.

Star Players

JMU has had numerous basketball stars over the course of its history. Players such as Charles Shackleford, Ralph Sampson, Curtis Pride, and others have all donned the JMU uniform and gone on to successful NBA careers.

The most recent star player to come out of JMU is Justin Anderson. Anderson was a key player on the team that won the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship in 2019. He was drafted in the first round of the NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks and now plays for the Brooklyn Nets

Key Contributors

The 2017-2018 Jmu Basketball Roster is a young one, with only two seniors, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have key contributors. One of those key contributors is junior forward Dimitri Batten. Batten, who is from Virginia Beach Virginia, was named to the All-CAA Second Team last season after averaging 13.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game He is a 6’5″, 220-pounder who can play both inside and outside. Another key contributor is sophomore guard Matt Lewis. Lewis, who is from Germantown, Maryland, was named the CAA Rookie of the Year last season after averaging 12.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game He is a 6’3″, 185-pounder who can also play both inside and outside.

Newcomers

The Dukes will have several new faces on the court this season as Coach Paul Renew and his staff have brought in a talented freshman class. Among the newcomers are point guard Matt Lewis, shooting guard Darius George, and forward Cordarrius Coleman.

The Coaching Staff

JMU men’s basketball is led by Head Coach Robert Burke. Burke is a native of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He has been the head coach at JMU since 2012. Burke has a career record of 135-103.

The assistant coaches for the Dukes are Kevin Kerstein, Chris Mayberry, and Matt Brady. Kerstein is in his first season as an Assistant Coach at JMU after serving as the Head Coach at NCAA Division II St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, North Carolina Mayberry is in his fourth season as an assistant coach at JMU. He came to JMU after serving as an assistant coach at George Mason University from 2008 to 2011. Brady is in his eighth season as an assistant coach at JMU. He has also served as the Head coach at Marist College and as an assistant coach at Siena College and Syracuse University

The Schedule

The 2019-20 James Madison men’s Basketball Schedule was released on Tuesday morning, with the Dukes set to open the season on Nov. 5 against George Washington at the JMU Convocation Center.

The Fans

The Jmu Basketball team has some of the most passionate and dedicated fans in the country. Every game is a sold-out event, and fans can be seen cheering on their team from the stands or in one of the many tailgating areas around campus. Basketball is a big part of life at Jmu, and the fans are a big part of what makes the team so special.

The Arena

The Arena, located on the campus of James Madison University, is home to the Dukes’ Basketball Program The facility, which opened in 1977, has a seating capacity of 5,000.

The Conference

Jmu is a part of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The CAA is a NCAA Division I Athletic Conference Jmu’s basketball team competes against other schools in the conference to try and earn a spot in the NCAA tournament

The Legacy

The Jmu Basketball Roster consists of many talented and dedicated individuals. Some have been with the team for years, while others are new additions. But one thing remains the same – the commitment to success and the drive to be the best.
