Lamar University Women’s Basketball – Go Cardinals!: Team History

Lamar University Women’s Basketball team originated in 1974. The team plays its home games at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas. They have been coached by Robin Harmony since 2013. As of June 2019, the team has an overall record of 780-437 (.640).

In 1987, the Cardinals made their first NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament appearance. They advanced to the Sweet Sixteen before losing to eventual National Champion Louisiana Tech The Cardinals made the tournament again in 1989, 1991, and 1992. They defeated Oregon in the first round of the 1991 tournament before losing to Washington in the second round. In 1992, they beat James Madison in the first round before losing to Virginia in the second round.

The Cardinals made their fifth NCAA tournament appearance in 2001 as a #12 seed. They upset 5th-seeded Notre Dame in the first round before losing to 4th-seeded Texas Tech in the second round.

Lamar made their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007 as a #14 seed. They upset 3rd-seeded Georgia Tech in the first round for their first ever win over a top-five seed before losing to 6th-seeded Rutgers in the second round.

The Coaching Staff for the Lamar University Women’s Basketball team is led by Head Coach Robin Harmony. Coach Harmony is entering her fourth season as head coach and her twelfth season overall as a collegiate Head Coach Prior to arriving at Lamar, Coach Harmony was the Head coach at Southeastern Louisiana University

Assistant coaches for the Cardinals include:
-Ricci Kelley: Entering his third season as an assistant coach Kelley came to Lamar after serving in the same capacity at McNeese State University
-Carrie Sheppard: Also in her third season with the Cardinals, Sheppard came to LU after serving as an assistant coach at Northwestern State University
-Kacie Cryer: Cryer is in her first season with the Cardinals and comes to LU after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Henderson State University

The Lamar University Women’s Basketball Program is one of the most successful in all of NCAA Division I. The team has made the NCAA tournament 16 times and the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) five times. They have also won conference championships in three different conferences. The Lamar University Cardinals women’s basketball team has some spirited rivalries, both past and present.

In the past, the most intense rivalry was with the Mcneese State Cowgirls. The two teams first met in 1977, and played each other nearly every season until 1995. The rivalry came to an end when McNeese State dropped their women’s Basketball Program

The current biggest rivals of the Cardinals are the Sam Houston State Bearkats and the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks The Cardinals have been conference rivals with both teams since 1995, when Lamar University joined the Southland Conference
