The Field

The Marist Baseball team is composed of student-athletes who each contribute their own skill set to the diamond. There are three primary ways that players influence the game: as a batter, as a pitcher, and in the field. Each position is important, but some may have a greater impact than others. The nine positions on a baseball diamond are:

Catcher – The catcher is responsible for receiving pitches from the pitcher and returning them to the mound, as well as calling for specific pitches and working with the pitchers to execute game plans.

First baseman – The first baseman’s primary responsibility is to field balls hit by the batter. They also play an important role in pick-offs and double plays.

Second baseman – Similar to the first baseman, the second baseman’s job is to field balls hit by the batter. They often have to make quick throws to first base to complete double plays.

Third baseman – The third baseman’s primary responsibility is to field balls hit by the batter. They also play an important role in pick-offs and double plays.

Shortstop – The shortstop is responsible for fielding balls hit by the batter and throwing them to first base. They also play an important role in double plays.

Left fielder – The left fielder’s primary responsibility is to catch balls hit by the batter that would otherwise fall for hits. They also need to be able to make throws quickly and accurately to prevent runners from advancing extra bases.

Center fielder – The center fielder needs to be able cover a lot of ground in order to catch balls hit by the batter. They often serve as the “quarterback” of the outfield, calling for other outfielders to catch specific fly balls They also need to be able throw quickly and accurately from deep in the outfield.
Right fielder – The right fielder’s primary responsibility is similar to that of the Left fielder they need catch balls hit by batters and make strong throws from deep in the outfield when necessary
