Northeast Division
The Northeast Division is one of the six divisions in the National Basketball Association (NBA). It currently consists of five teams, all of which are located in the Northeastern United States The division was created at the start of the 2004–05 NBA season when the league expanded from 29 to 30 teams with the addition of the Charlotte Bobcats.
The divisional alignment was partially due to geography, as all five teams are located in close proximity to each other. The primary reasoning behind creating this division, however, was to balanced out the two Eastern Conference conferences, which each had 15 teams. With an odd number of teams in each conference, one conference would have had an uneven number of teams in each division (eight in one division and seven in the other).
In order for both conferences to have an equal number of teams in each division (16), it was necessary to create a new division with five teams. The NBA has not added any additional teams since then, so the Northeast Division remains the only division in the league with an odd number of teams.
The four most recent Northeast Division champions are:
--Boston Celtics (2017-18)
--Toronto Raptors (2016-17)
--Boston Celtics (2015-16)
--Cleveland Cavaliers (2014-15)
