In January 2014, Houstonian Kelvin Sampson was named the new head coach of the Texas Southern University basketball team taking over for previous head coach Mike Davis

Sampson, who is known for his recruiting ability and development of players, coached at Oklahoma from 1994 to 2006 and Indiana from 2006 to 2008. He has also served as an Assistant Coach with the Milwaukee Bucks and Houston Rockets

In his first season at TSU, Sampson led the Tigers to a 21-12 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament The following year, Sampson guided TSU to a 24-9 record and another NCAA tournament appearance.

In 2016-17, Sampson led the Tigers to a school-record 27 wins and their third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. The 27 wins were the most by a TSU team since joining the SWAC in 1986.

Sampson has been named SWAC Coach of the Year three times (2014, 2015, 2016) and was named NABC Region 6 Coach of the Year in 2017.

In the fourth and final part of our series, we take a look at Kelvin Sampson’s first year as the head coach of Texas Southern.

As expected, Sampson led the Tigers to a 20-15 record in his first season. However, the team did not make the NCAA tournament which was a bit of a disappointment.

In his second season, Sampson led the Tigers to a 21-12 record and an appearance in the NIT. The team lost in the first round, but it was a step in the right direction.

Sampson has shown that he is a Good Coach who can improve a team’s record. Hopefully, he can lead the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in several years.

Sampson has a wealth of experience as a head coach at both the collegiate and professional levels. He led the University of Oklahoma to the Final Four in 2002 and was named National Coach of the Year. He also coached at Indiana University from 2006-08.

After a successful college coaching career, Kelvin Sampson is returning to the sidelines as the new head coach of Texas Southern University Coach Sampson’s return to coaching comes after a five-year hiatus, during which he ran his own basketball training business. Prior to his time away from coaching, Coach Sampson was the head coach at Indiana University where he led the Hoosiers to five NCAA Tournament appearances in six seasons.

Coach Sampson inherits a Texas Southern team that went 14-18 last season and finished in last place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference The Tigers have not made an NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003, but Coach Sampson is confident that he can turn the program around. “I’m excited about the challenge of rebuilding Texas Southern basketball,” said Coach Sampson. “It’s going to take some time, but I’m confident that we can get the program back on track.”

In his first season at the helm, Coach Sampson will be working with a young and inexperienced team. The Tigers will likely start just two seniors and two juniors in their lineup, with the rest of the rotation made up of sophomores and freshmen. Despite being young and inexperienced, Coach Sampson believes that his team has potential and is eager to get started with them. “We’re going to be a work in progress early on,” said Coach Sampson. “But I really like our potential and I’m excited to start working with this group.”

They finished the regular season with a 21-11 record and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament They went on to win their first tournament game in five years before falling to eventual National Champion Virginia in the second round.

Despite falling short of their ultimate goal, it was a successful first season for Coach Sampson and the Tigers. They have laid a foundation for continued success in the years to come and Coach Sampson has proven that he is up to the task of leading them to new heights.
