The UC Riverside Highlanders are gearing up for another exciting season of baseball! Get to know the 2019 roster and find out who to keep an eye on this year.

2019 UCR Baseball Roster

The 2019 UC Riverside baseball team will look to build on the momentum of their 2018 campaign in which they won their first ever Big West conference title and made their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament The Highlanders return a core group of players from that team, including All-American pitcher Kevin Abel who was named the co-Big West Pitcher of the Year. Additionally, the team welcomes a number of talented newcomers who will look to make an impact. Get to know the 2019 UC Riverside Baseball Team below.

Pitchers

Kevin Abel – The 2018 co-Big West Pitcher of the Year, Abel was also named an All-American by multiple outlets and was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft by the New York Mets He posted a 10-4 record with a 2.88 ERA in 19 starts last season, leading the team in wins, ERA and strikeouts (119).

Thai Quynh – A transfer from Ohlone College, Quynh is a right-handed pitcher who was named a First Team All-American by the California Community college baseball Coaches Association last season after going 10-1 with a 1.66 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched

Ryan Nutof – Nutof is a right-handed pitcher who appeared in 15 games out of the bullpen last season, posting a 1-0 record with three saves and a 4.50 ERA. He will look to build on that success this season as he takes on a larger role on the pitching staff.

Infielders

Daylen Winkless – A transfer from Cypress College, Winkless is an infielder who hit .333 with four home runs and 26 RBI last season. He was named First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-State as well as being named an Orange Empire Conference Golden Glove winner.

Joey Mills – A redshirt junior, Mills is an infielder who missed all of last season due to injury but played a big role on the team in 2016 and 2017, hitting .273 with seven home runs and 41 RBI over those two seasons. He will look to get back to that level of production this year as he returns to full health.

Felix Minjares – A freshman from Beaumont, Calif., Minjares is an infielder who comes to UC Riverside as one of the highest rated recruits in program history. He was ranked as high as No. 18 among California High School prospects by perfect game USA coming out of high school and should make an immediate impact for the Highlanders this season

2019 UCR Baseball News

The UC Riverside Baseball team is coming off a great year in which they won the Big West regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014. The Highlanders will look to build on that success in 2019 with a roster that features plenty of experience and talent. Here is a closer look at the 2019 UC Riverside Baseball Team

Returning Players
The Highlanders will have 16 returners from last year’s squad, including eight Position players and eight pitchers. Among the returnees are All-Big West selections Robert Lueddeke (pitcher) and Austin401 Rowe (outfielder). Other key returners include pitchers Chris Canto and Trevor Bettencourt, as well as infielders Matt Doyle and Armani Smith.

Newcomers
UC Riverside will have 14 newcomers on the roster in 2019, including 12 freshmen and two transfer students. The group of newcomers includes highly-touted recruits like pitcher Jacob Hernandez and infielder Ryder McLaughlin. Hernandez was ranked as the No. 28 prospect in California by perfect game USA, while McLaughlin was ranked as the No. 45 prospect in the state by Prep Baseball Report

In 2019, the Highlanders finished the season with a record of 24 wins and 32 losses overall and 11 wins and 11 losses in conference play

2019 UCR Baseball Standings

The UC Riverside Highlanders began the 2019 season ranked last in the Big West Conference but they quickly proved the experts wrong. The ‘Landers went on an impressive run that saw them clinch the conference title and earn a berth in the NCAA tournament

The team finished the regular season with a 37-20 record, which was good for first place in the conference. They went on to win the conference tournament which gave them automatic entry into the NCAA tournament

In the NCAA tournament UC Riverside won their first game against Louisville before losing to Ole Miss

The 2019 team was led by a number of talented players, many of whom are returning for the 2020 season. Let’s take a look at some of the key members of this year’s squad:

Pitchers:
--Joey Hauser Hauser was one of the best pitchers in the conference, finishing the year with a 9-2 record and a 3.48 ERA. He was named First Team All-Big West and will be back for his senior season in 2020.
-Mario Cordero: Cordero was another key member of the pitching staff, finishing with an 8-4 record and a 3.86 ERA. He’ll also be back for his senior season in 2020.
-Garrett Irvin: Irvin was one of four pitchers to receive All-Big West honors, as he finished the year with a 7-4 record and a 3.38 ERA. He’ll be back for his junior season in 2020.

2019 UCR Baseball Players

The UC Riverside Highlanders Baseball Team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of University of California, Riverside in Riverside, California, United States The team is a member of the Big West Conference which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I. UC Riverside’s first baseball team was fielded in 1957. The team plays its Home Games at the 2,500-seat Muscle Beach Stadium in Riverside, California. The Highlanders are coached by Troy Percival.

2019 UCR Baseball Coaches

The 2019 UC Riverside Baseball Coaching Staff will feature head coach Troy Scobic in his first year at the helm of the program. He will be joined by assistant coaches Matt Curtis and Steve McFarland.

Scobic comes to UC Riverside after spending the previous three seasons as the Head Coach at Sierra College, where he compiled a record of 103-57 (.645). He led the Wolverines to back-to-back Big 8 conference championships in 2017 and 2018 and was named the conference’s Coach of the Year in both seasons.

Curtis returns for his second season on staff after serving as an Assistant Coach during the 2018 season. Prior to his arrival at UC Riverside, Curtis spent four seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Concordia University Irvine.

McFarland joins the UC Riverside staff after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Menlo College

2019 UCR Baseball Alumni

The UC Riverside Baseball team will once again look to contend for a Big West Conference title in 2019. Head coach Troy Percival, who is entering his sixth season at the helm of the program, has announced the schedule for the upcoming season The Highlanders will play 28 games at home and 30 on the road.

The team will open the season with a four-game series at Cal State Fullerton from February 15-18. They will then travel to San Diego for a three-game set against USD from February 22-24 before opening up their home schedule with a three-game series against Oregon State from March 1-3.

The non-conference portion of the schedule also includes home games against Long Beach State (March 12-13), Stanford (March 19), Pepperdine (April 2), USC (April 16), and Nevada (May 8).

UCR will open conference play on the road with a three-game series at CSUN from March 29-31. They will then host UC Davis for a three-game series from April 5-7. Other conference home series include UC Santa Barbara (April 26-28), Cal Poly (May 17-19), and Long Beach State (May 31-June 2).

On the road in conference play, UCR will travel to UC Irvine (April 12-14), Hawai’i (April 19-21), UC Santa Barbara (May 10-12), and Cal State Northridge (May 24-26).

The top eight teams in the Conference Standings will advance to the 2019 Big West conference tournament which is scheduled to take place from May 28 – June 1 at header rounds host sites, with the higher seeds hosting each series. The Tournament Championship game will be played on Saturday, June 1, and will be televised live on ESPNU.
