The 1975 UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team represented the University of California Los Angeles in the 197576 NCAA Division I men’s Basketball season Led by tenth-year Head Coach John Wooden the Bruins won their 13th NCAA Championship, defeating Kentucky 92-85 in the 1976 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship Game. The Bruins finished the season with a 283 (162 in conference) record and won their 24th and final conference championship under Wooden.

This was Wooden’s tenth and final National Championship team as head coach of the Bruins. The core group of seniors from this team (including Fred Slaughter, David Meyers, and Richard Washington) had already won two National Championships together (1972 and 1973). They would go on to win a third title in 1976 as well.

The Coaches

In his second season as Head Coach Gene Bartow led the UCLA Bruins to a 195 overall record (122 in conference) and the program’s 16th consecutive conference regular season title. The Bruins were undefeated at Pauley Pavilion, going 130. After winning the conference tournament over Arizona State the Bruins advanced to the Elite Eight of the 1975 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament before losing to Kentucky. After the season, frontline players David Meyers and Richard Washington were both named second-team All-Americans by various publications.

Schedule and results[edit]

UCLA began the season unranked.[1] After winning their first 12 games, they entered the Top 20 in the Coaches’ Poll at #19.[2] They defeated three ranked opponents en route to a 16-0 record in Pac-8 play, which clinched their sixth consecutive conference title [3][4] They also had a non-conference win over defending National Champion North Carolina [5][6] The Bruins finished the regular season with a record of 26-2,[7] and were ranked #1 in both national polls for the first time since 196970.[8][9] They were invited to the NCAA tournament as the top seed in their region, where they defeated Detroit and Maryland to reach the Elite Eight.[10][11][12] There they met second-seeded Kentucky,[13] but won 75-74 on a jump shot by David Meyers with two seconds remaining. In the Final Four, they avenged an early season loss to Kansas with a 67-59 victory,[14][15] then defeated Louisville 92-85 in double overtime to win their seventh national title,[16][17][18] which remains tied for second most all time behind only Kentucky (8).

This was the Bruins’ 75th season and 76th overall season of college basketball The Bruins finished the season with an overall record of 283 (151 in the Pac-8), their best since 1973. The team was ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press Poll, which was released following the completion of the NCAA tournament The Bruins won their seventh consecutive conference title and qualified for their twelfth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.

The Legacy

In 1975, the basketball team of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) went undefeated on their way to winning the NCAA championship. After the season, six of the players from that team were selected in the first round of the NBA draft setting a still-standing record for the most players from one school taken in the first round of an NBA Draft The Bruins finished the season with a 283 record and won their 11th NCAA championship by defeating Kentucky 9285 in the final game They then defeated Oklahoma State 6855 in the semifinal game and Akron 6458 in the national semifinal game to reach the Championship game

The John Wooden Era

The 1975 UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team represented the University of California, Los Angeles in the 1975 NCAA Division I men’s basketball season and were defending National Champions The Bruins entered the season as defending champions of both the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament and the Pacific-8 Conference. UCLA was also looking to tie Kentucky for the most NCAA Championships with six.[1][2] The Bruins, led by tenth year Head coach John Wooden, played their home games at Pauley Pavilion as members of the AAWU West.

The Bill Walton Years

The Bill Walton years (19711974) were marked by some of the most successful seasons in the history of UCLA men’s basketball. Under head coach John Wooden, Walton led the Bruins to a record of 883 during his three years as a starter, including an undefeated 300 season in 197273 and back-to-back national championships in 1972 and 1973. Walton was named National College Player of the Year all three years, and he was the first player ever to be named Pacific-8 Conference Player of the Year three times. He also won two gold medals as a member of the U.S. men’s national basketball team one at the 1972 Summer Olympics and one at the 1974 FIBA World Championship

After leaving UCLA, Walton played for the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers for nine years, winning an NBA Championship in 1977. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.

The team was led by seniors David Meyers and Richard Washington, and junior Marques Johnson. Other Key Players included freshman Brad Holland, sophomores James Wilkes and Larry Farmer. The Bruins started the season ranked #1 in both major polls.

Schedule[edit]

The Bruins began the season with a loss to Kentucky in the Rupp Arena This was Kentucky’s first regular season game in their new arena. The next game was against Purdue in Milwaukee. The Boilermakers had recently been admitted to the Big Ten conference and were led by senior center Dave Schellhase. UCLA won handily, 95-74.[1]

The third game of the season was against Notre Dame at Pauley Pavilion. The Irish were coached by Digger Phelps and featured senior All-American George McGinnis. UCLA won easily, 87-63.[2] After wins over Memphis State New Mexico State and Bradley,[3][4][5]

The Bruins suffered their second loss of the season to Louisville in Freedom Hall on December 13.[6] The Cardinals were coached by Denny Crum and featured junior center Wiley Brown and senior guard Philip McCurdy. UCLA bounced back with wins over Texas,[7] Kansas,[8] Indiana,[9] And South Carolina [10][11] After a loss to Stanford in Palo Alto [12][13][14]

UCLA went on a 17-game Winning Streak that lasted until late February when they lost to Oregon State in Corvallis.[15][16][17] They finished the Regular Season with wins over Southern California (SC), Washington State (WSU), Oregon (ORE), Washington (WASH), Arizona State (ASU) and Arizona (AZ).[18][19]: 191192 On March 1, 1976, Johnson was named United Press International (UPI) College basketball player of the Year.[20″, year = “1976

The Current UCLA Team

The current UCLA team is led by head coach Mick Cronin and assistant coaches Chris Harriman and Tony Nguyen. The team plays its home games at Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles California.

UCLA has been a member of the Pac-12 Conference since it was founded in 1959. The Bruins have won 28 conference championships including 27 in men’s basketball, and have made 42 NCAA Tournament appearances, of which they have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen 19 times, the Elite Eight 12 times, and the Final Four four times.
