A year before the program was banned from postseason play, the Rebels were able to win a title in just their second season of NCAA Division I basketball. The team
The UNLV basketball team represented the University of Nevada Las Vegas in the 1991 NCAA Division I men’s Basketball season The Rebels were led by Head Coach Jerry Tarkanian, in his nineteenth year at UNLV, and played their home games at the Thomas & Mack Center. They finished the season 262 and 160 in conference to win the Big West’s regular season championship. They went on to win both the conference tournament and NCAA West Regional to advance to the Final Four for the second time in school history. In the national semifinal, they defeated Duke 7977 in a game later known as “The Greatest Game Ever Played”, which is widely considered one of college basketball’s most exciting games In the National Championship game, they were upset by the underdog North Carolina Tar Heels 7978, despite being heavy favorites.

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels Basketball team represents the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the Mountain West Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I. The team is currently coached by T. J. Otzelberger. They play their home games at the Thomas & Mack Center on UNLV’s main campus in Paradise, Nevada.
In 199091, UNLV won their second consecutive NCAA championship Led by future Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame members Larry Johnson and Stacey Augmon, as well as head coach Jerry Tarkanian, the team amassed a 355 record and defeated Duke by a record margin of 30 points in the Championship game ending Duke’s season with a record of 327. It was also UNLV’s sixth consecutive 30-win season and ninth consecutive 20-win season. The team became only the second team in NCAA Division I history at that time to win 35 games in a season (Indiana did it first during their undefeated 197576 campaign).

The Rebels finished the season 26-2 overall and 15-1 in conference play to win their sixth consecutive Big West Conference regular season championship. They also won the conference tournament for the fifth straight time to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament As a #1 seed in the West region, they defeated Loyola Marymount and Louisville before losing in the regional final to eventual national runner-up Kansas.

UNLV won their first ever NCAA National Championship by defeating Duke in the Final Four, then-record 105-73.
This was UNLV’s second consecutive Final Four appearance. They had also made it to the Elite Eight in 1990, but lost to eventual National Champion Arkansas.
The team is listed in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Records book under “Most points scored in a season”, with an average of 90.8 points per game They are also listed under “Most points scored in a season, including postseason”, with an average of 100.7 points per game
The aftermath
It has been almost 30 years since the UNLV mens basketball team went on its historic run to the Final Four a run that ended in a loss to Duke in the National Championship game.
The team, nicknamed the Rebels, was led by Head coach Jerry Tarkanian and starred players such as Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony and Larry Johnson. The team was known for its high-scoring offense and tough defense, and it won several close games en route to the Final Four.
The game against Duke was close, but UNLV ultimately lost by a score of 79-77. After the game, Tarkanian was quoted as saying We had our chances. We just couldnt put it away.
The loss was a crushing end to what had been an magical season for UNLV, but the team and its fans could take solace in the fact that they had gone further than any other team in school history.
The legacy

The book is co- authored by Lan Whitney, who served as the team’s Director of Media Relations, and D.J. Johnson, the radio play-by-play voice of the Runnin ‘Rebels.
