Anthony Terrell Smith (December 9, 1966 February 28, 2015), better known by his nickname “The Ant”, was an American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Over his 13-year NBA Career Mason played for the New Jersey Nets Denver Nuggets New York Knicks Charlotte Hornets Milwaukee Bucks Toronto Raptors Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies He also played for several teams in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), earning league MVP honors in 1991.

A versatile 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m) forward-center, Mason was selected by the Nets with the 53rd overall pick in the 1988 NBA draft out of Tennessee State University He became a major contributor off the bench for New Jersey during his rookie season and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. After being traded to Denver midway through his second season in the league, Mason had limited playing time over the next two years. However, he enjoyed a breakout year with the Nuggets in 199192, as he averaged 16.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while shooting over 53 percent from the field.

Mason’s career took off after he was traded to the Knicks prior to the 199394 season. In New York, he developed into an All-Star for the first time and helped lead the Knicks to their first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1973. Though he spent just four seasons with New York before being traded to Charlotte in 1997, Mason remains one of only four players in franchise history with at least 4,000 points and 2,500 rebounds.
