The History of Duke Basketball

The Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team represents Duke University in NCAA Division I college basketball and competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Origins of Duke Basketball

Duke University’s Basketball team began in 1905 with its first game against Trinity College The team went 0-2 that season, but things improved in subsequent years. In 1920, the team made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament and in 1928, it won its first NCAA championship The team has gone on to win five more championships, most recently in 2015.

The 2010s were a decade of success for the Duke men’s Basketball Program The team won five ACC championships, made six NCAA Tournament appearances, and won the National Championship in 2015.

--Grant Hill played for Duke from 1991 to 1994. He was a two-time NCAA champion and a three-time All-American. He was the third overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft and went on to have a successful career in the league, playing for the Detroit Pistons Orlando Magic Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

-Elton Brand: played for Duke from 1996 to 1999. He was a two-time NCAA champion and a two-time All-American. He was the first overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft and went on to have a successful career in the league, playing for the Chicago Bulls Los Angeles Clippers Dallas Mavericks Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers.

-Shane Battier: played for Duke from 1997 to 2001. He was a one-time NCAA champion and a three-time All-American. He was drafted sixth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2001 NBA draft and went on to have a successful career in the league, playing for the Grizzlies, Houston Rockets Miami Heat and Detroit Pistons He retired in 2014 and currently works as an analyst for ESPN.

Duke University was founded in 1838. The Varsity Basketball team was started in 1900. Duke played its first game against Wake Forest which it won 24-10. That same year, Duke won the Southern conference championship

In 1938, Duke won the National Championship for the first time. Led by star player Ralph Beard, the team went 27-1 and defeated Kentucky 58-42 in the final game Beard was named tournament MVP.

In 1960, Duke again won the National Championship This time, led by Coach Vic Bubas and star player Art Heyman, Duke defeated Ohio State 75-55 in the final game. Heyman was named tournament MVP.

In 1963, Duke made it to the national semifinals but lost to eventual champion Loyola (IL). This was one of Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s first games as head coach of Duke. In his second season as head coach Krzyzewski led Duke to its third National Championship in 1991. Since then, under Coach K’s leadership, Duke has won five more national championships (1992, 2001, 2010, 2015, and 2017).
