Since the inception of the Independence Basketball Program there have been a total of eight head coaches Some of these coaches have had extraordinary careers, while others’ time with the team was relatively short-lived. However, each and every one of these coaches has helped shape the team into what it is today.

Coach Tom Izzo is the current Head Coach of the Independence basketball team He took over the position in 1995 and has held it ever since. Under his guidance, the team has seen a great deal of success, including five conference championships and two National Championships

Prior to Coach Izzo, Coach Jud Heathcote led the team to its first conference championship in 1976. He coached at Independence for eight years before retiring in 1983. In those eight years, Coach Heathcote compiled a record of 150-106 (.585), which included four 20-win seasons.

After Coach Heathcote’s retirement, Assistant Coach Bill Frieder took over as head coach As Head Coach Frieder led the team to four more conference championships and one National Championship in 1989. He coached at Independence for 10 years before leaving to become Head coach at Michigan in 1989. In his 10 years at Independence, Coach Frieder compiled a record of 218-62 (.779), which included six 20-win seasons.

Following Frieder’s departure, assistant coach Steve Fisher was promoted to head coach In his first year as head coach Fisher led the team to its sixth Conference Championship and second National Championship in 1990. He coached at Independence for nine more years before leaving to become head coach at San Diego State in 1999. In his 10 years at Independence,Coach Fisher compiled a record of 196-96 (.671), which included five 20-win seasons.

After Fisher’s departure, assistant coach Tom Crean was promoted to head coach Crean coached at Independence for three years before leaving to become head coach at Marquette in 2008. In his three years at Independence, Coach Crean compiled a record of 54-60 (.474).

In 2008, assistant coach John Beilein was promoted to Head Coach Beilein coached at independence for five years before leaving to become head Michigan in 2013.. In his five years at independence ,Beilein compiled a record 109 – 105( .507) which included two 20 win season .

After Beliein’s departure , assistant coordinator Bacari Alexander was promoted as acting head until a new had been named .In 2016 ,Nate Oats was then named as new permanent head men’s basketball coach .
