Iona Gaels basketball roster Who’s Who?
The Iona Gaels men’s basketball team is a college basketball program that represents Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. The team is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference The Gaels have played their home games at the Hynes Athletic Center since 1980.
The Gaels have appeared in 14 NCAA Tournaments and have advanced to the second round 4 times. They appeared in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) 12 times, with their most recent appearance coming in 2019. Iona has never played in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament but did appear as an independent Division I school in 1952 and 1953 before joining the MAAC.
The Gaels have had four players drafted into the NBA. As of 2019, Iona has produced one NBA All-Star Jeff Ruland, who was selected in 1982.

A.J. English: A 6’4″ guard, English was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the year. He is Iona’s leading returning scorer after averaging 19.9 points per game last season.
Chris Burdine: A 6’7″ forward, Burdine is Iona’s top returning rebounder. He averaged 6.5 rebounds per game last season.
Taaj Ridley: A 6’9″ center, Ridley is Iona’s best shot-blocker. He averaged 2 blocking shots per game last season.
Iona Basketball Roster Newcomers
The Iona Basketball team has had a successful season so far, and they show no signs of slowing down. With a strong core of returning players and some talented newcomers, the Gaels are poised to make some noise in the NCAA tournament Here’s a look at the new faces on this year’s squad.

Noteworthy: Crawford was a four-star recruit coming out of High School and was ranked as the #57 player in the country by ESPN. He was also named Baltimore Sun Player of the Year as a senior.

Height: 6-8
Weight: 225
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Orlando, FL
Previous School: Montverde Academy
Noteworthy: Lewis was a five-star recruit coming out of high school and was ranked as the #21 player in the country by ESPN. He played in the McDonald’s All-American Game and was named Florida Mr. Basketball as a senior.
Iona Basketball Roster Departures
In May of 2019, Iona Basketball announced several changes to their roster for the upcoming 2019-2020 Season
Headlining the departures is Senior captain E.J. Crawford, who has decided to forgo his final year of eligibility and declare for the NBA draft
joins him in declaring for the NBA is Rickey McGill, a 6’1″ guard from Queens, NY. McGill averaged 11.5 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game last season and was one of the Gaels’ most vocal leaders on and off the court.
Several other players will not be returning to the team next season as well. Jordan Washington, a 6’8″ forward from Brooklyn, NY, has decided to transfer to another school after two years with the Gaels. TK Edogi, a 6’7″ forward from Lagos, Nigeria will also be leaving Iona after two seasons with the team. Both Washington and Edogi were key contributors off the bench last year and will be missed by their teammates and coaches alike.
Finally, freshman Zach Lewis has decided to leave Iona Basketball to focus on his academics. Lewis, a 6’3″ guard from Detroit, MI, saw limited playing time last season but was a key part of the team’s success nonetheless. His departure leaves Iona with one fewer player from Detroit on their roster.

Iona basketball announced their roster for the upcoming season on October 1st. Here are the results:
Coach Tim Cluess will have a lot of talent to work with this season. The team is led by Senior A.J. English, who was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. English is joined by fellow seniors TK Edogi and Jordan Washington, who were both named to the Preseason All-MAAC Second Team. Sophomore Deyshonee Much will also be a key player for Iona this season after being named to the Preseason All-Rookie Team

Iona is coming off of a season in which they finished first in the MAAC. They have a lot of talent returning this season and will look to make a run at the NCAA Tournament Here is a analysis of the Iona Basketball Roster

● A.J. English – English is the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year and is one of the best shooters in the country. He averaged 21.1 points per game last season and shot 41% from three-point range English is also a good defender and should be one of the leaders on this team.
● Jordan Washington – Washington was Iona’s second leading scorer last season, averaging 14.2 points per game He is a very good post player and has the ability to score in many different ways. Washington will need to be a leader on both ends of the court for Iona to be successful this season.
● Tosin Mehinti – Mehinti was Iona’s third leading scorer last season, averaging 13.1 points per game He is a very athletic player who can finish above the rim. Mehinti has also improved his jump shot and will need to be a consistent scorer for Iona this season.

● Rickey McGill – McGill is a transfer from Wagner and will have to sit out this season due to NCAA regulations. He is a very good point guard who can score and distribute the ball well. McGill will be eligible to play next season and should be one of the leaders on this team.
● EJ Crawford – Crawford is a freshman who was ranked as one of the top 100 prospects in his class by ESPN. He is a 6’5″ wing who can shoot and score in many different ways. Crawford will need to adjust to the college game, but has the potential to be a very good player for Iona

Iona College is a Division I Basketball school that competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Gaels are currently coached by Tim Cluess, who is in his tenth season with the team. Iona has made seven appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament with their most recent appearance coming in 2020. The Gaels have also made two appearances in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), with their most recent appearance coming in 2019.
As of the 2020-21 season, the Gaels have an all-time record of 1,493-1,014 (.596).

Iona basketball roster History
Iona College is a private school in New Rochelle, New York. They are best known for their men’s basketball team which has won the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament two times, in 1980 and 2019. The team has also been to the tournament five other times. The Gaels play in the Metro Atlantic athletic conference (MAAC). Their home games are played at the Hynes Athletic Center on campus.

When looking at the Iona Basketball Roster history, some of the most notable players include Jeff Ruland, who played center on the 1980 team that won the NCAA championship Kevin Willard, who played point guard on that same team and is now the Head Coach at Seton Hall University; and Scott Machado, who was named MAAC Player of the Year in 2012.
